Southern Baptists are huddling up and practicing a few winning plays
for the Lord for Houston's upcoming Super Bowl celebration.
More than 3,000 local and out-of-town Baptists are expected to assist
in NFL- and locally sponsored Super Bowl XXXVIII activities, from the
neighborly greeting of visitors at airports to city clean-up crews.
But they will also take part in direct evangelistic efforts
distributing tracts and hosting game night "watch parties," said the
Rev. Tim Knopps of Oklahoma City.
Knopps is one of a handful of "event evangelists," people who target
assembled audiences at large-scale events such as Super Bowls, the
World Series, college basketball's Final Four and pop concerts. The
Baptist players hope to distribute 200,000 pieces of Christian
literature ranging from religious sports magazines to tracts. The
number would be a record for a Super Bowl outreach. A 15-minute video
featuring Houston Texans owner Bob McNair and five of his players
witnessing to the importance of faith in their lives will be the
centerpiece of the church watch parties, Knopps said.
"The goal is to have a Christian presence and participation in a lot
of the Super Bowl activities," said the Rev. David Fannin, pastor of
Nassau Bay Baptist Church and chairman of the Houston Super Bowl
Evangelism Project.
"We are aware of the fact that the Super Bowl is not designed as an
evangelistic event," Fannin said. "Our goal is not to go in and
present some overly evangelistic witness at Super Bowl venues. We just
want to establish some Christian presence there, establish
relationships with folks in the community and just let people know the
church is here and wants to be part of the community."
That's the key to "event evangelism," said Knopps, who will be paid by
local churches and the Southern Baptist Convention's North American
Mission Board.
"From a religious standpoint, one thing we have found out is that when
our church members start getting involved with the community, the
community starts getting involved with the church," said Knopps, whose
events ministry is called Timothy Institute
(www.timothyinstitute.org). Super Bowl XXXVIII is his eighth
championship football game.
"The (local) response has been amazing," said Knopps, who started
preparing for this game two years ago with a visit to the city's
Southern Baptist leaders. More than 200 of the area's 800 Southern
Baptist churches are registered to participate.
In addition to volunteers from around the country, Baptists from
Jacksonville, Fla., the host city for next year's Super Bowl, are
coming to work and observe the Houston operation.
In addition to the mission board, the evangelism project has the
support of both the conservative and moderate state conventions in
Texas. Union Baptist Association, which consists of nearly 500
churches in Harris County, also is participating. The groups have
contributed nearly $50,000 in money and materiel to the program,
Fannin said.
More than 500 church volunteers are expected to help prepare give-away
packets and seat cushions that the NFL will distribute to the 69,500
fans at the game. Volunteers will say a brief "SOS" prayer over each
seat asking for salvation, obedience to God and safety for each fan,
said Roy Guel, a Sagemont (Baptist) Church staff member who is
coordinating volunteers.
"It is a quick blessing that asks God's blessing and salvation for the
person that will be sitting in the seat," he said.
Several churches will hold "Super Bowl Watch Parties" with big-screen
TVs and plenty of soft drinks and snacks to attract non-members from
their neighborhoods, Guel said.
Sagemont Church in southeast Houston expects 1,500 at three separate
parties geared to children, youths and adults, Guel said.
Four Southern Baptist inner-city mission projects expect 300 to 400
viewers at their parties, Guel said. And Brookhollow Baptist Church in
northwest Houston is preparing for 1,500 to 2,000.
A Super Bowl Watch Party Playbook written by Knopps includes recipes
for sausage cheese footballs and Backfield Chili. A successful watch
party's motto is "You can't share Jesus too many times. And you can't
have too many balloons," he said.
The watch parties bring in people who ordinarily would never walk onto
church property. "Event evangelism will actually get people to come to
our event or your home who would not come at all," Knopps said.
The party will not be a church service, he said. It is an effort to
show nonbelievers that Christians are normal people who also enjoy
sports. Visitors will see that the only difference between them and
church members is that believers have a "walk with God, a relationship
with Jesus Christ and that's what makes the difference," he said.
That will be emphasized by the video featuring the faith testimonies
of McNair and five Texans including punter Chad Stanley and wide
receiver J.J. Moses.
The impact of event evangelism can be measured by church
participation, the number of volunteers and by new commitments to
Christ, Knopps said. Efforts during Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans in
2002 resulted in 1,000 new commitments while the 1999 game in Miami
produced 3,500 commitments, he said.

Why shouldn't they be? Right wing Christians own the US government. And even

It's sad, but yes, some have.
The time has come not to vote for whom you actually want but for the
one who will be the least bad.
Which is a sad state of affairs.
And of course they'll claim a mandate because they'll think people
voted *for* them instead of against the others.
Oh, well.

Why would snowflakes, or any other higher IQ nonlife form want to go
to the moon, or mars or any other dead planet? Higher IQ nonlife forms
prefer sharing the space time continuum with lower IQ life forms on
living planets, like this one. Going to the moon would be just dumb,
only very low IQ life forms like Shrub(tm) would want to do that.

They have almost dictatorial political power. They truly think they can do
anything and get away with. For the most part, they've been right...at least
since January 2001.

I'd sure like to see them do this for the Stanley Cup finals...particularly if
New Jersey is in the finals again. They'd be laughed out of the arena, as they
should be laughed out of any arena they try to insert themselves into.
