"Death threat lobbed at Muslim group promoting moderate beliefs

CBC News
A moderate Muslim group that called for a separation of religion and
state in a recent documentary has received a pointed death threat.
The Muslim Canadian Congress received the message Tuesday morning. It
was left on the Toronto telephone of secretary general Munir Pervaiz.
"I swear on 99 names of Allah, if you don't cease from your campaign
of smearing Islam ... I will slaughter you," the unidentified caller
said.
Toronto police and its hate-crime unit are investigating.
The message was addressed to congress president Farzana Hassan and
founder Tarek Fatah, and mentioned Allah's name three times in a row.
"It is scary," Pervaiz told CBC News on Wednesday.
"This is the first time that someone is really swearing in the name of
God and it appears that person is taking an oath by announcing the
name of God three times."
'Proves problem exists'
Pervaiz said the accusation of smearing Islam is a serious one, an
offence that some Muslims believe is worthy of punishment.
The death threat comes after the Muslim Canadian Congress took part in
a documentary that aired on CBC News on March 6. The piece examined
the divides between secular and fundamental beliefs within the
Canadian Muslim community.
The congress has been targeted for its moderate beliefs before, but
never in such a direct fashion, Pervaiz said. Members have had their
homes and cars damaged after sharing their opinions publicly.
"We want as many people to know that such a problem exists in Canada,"
Pervaiz said. "People thought we were exaggerating, but this now kind
of confirms and proves the problem exists."

Just thought I'd change the thread title. After all, reputable news
sources usually use titles like "Woman Gang Raped and Killed" rather
than "Men Attack". Tabloids tend to do it the other way around. At the
very least, it is more concise.

Removing Agency?
Be it on your own shoulders...

You have a point there. But since there is only a suspected agent, the
original title is potentially misleading and potentially inaccurate. My
original point may not be entirely accurate, though I was talking about
*title* only, so I am undecided. But the original title really lacked
rigour. Journalistically (sp?), I think my change is better. It is
based on the known facts, and doesn't risk an anti-Muslim innuendo, as
most mentions of Islam tend to in the current environment, yours
included. Probably it wouldn't have stuck out if you had said "Islamic
Extremist Death Threat in Canada", though it still would have been
conjecture. What's worse, removing agency, or stating a possibility as
a fact? I don't know.
Anyhow, cheers.

It is both a possibility and a probability nearing certainty.
If one were as guarded as you are in not forwarding a proposition as
highly likely unless one was absolutely 100% sure, then one would be
reduced to a pointless waffler.
As I get older, I realise that my character judgments are mostly
accurate, and have not the time left to live to offer the benefit of
the doubt to those who have abrogated that right.
As I said, it is entirely up to you if you choose the other path.
I don't. And am forthright deliberately and purposefully.
I am perfectly prepared to cop the consequences on the rare occasions
that I have "jumped the gun".
Given all that, I do understand where you are "coming from".
I used to think like you when I was 20 or so, and assumed that every
one in the world had the same benign intent as I.
Boy, was I WRONG!!!
