Battle Rages Outside Iraq's "Holy City of Najaf"

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Najaf Battle Claims 2 U.S. Troops, Hundreds
Of Insurgents.
Dramatic video obtained by AP Television News showed Iraqi forces
involved in a gun battle with insurgents near the Shiite holy city.
Smoke could be seen rising from the site where witnesses said
the helicopter came down.
The video was captured on a mobile phone by an Iraqi policeman
at the front line of the clash.
Heavy gunfire could be heard as Iraqi troops took up positions
along a ridge.
Provincial Governor Assad Sultan Abu Klil told reporters that
government forces attacked insurgents in the area after hearing
of plans to assassinate Shiite clerics and pilgrims during
"The Ashoura Festival", which reaches its climax on Tuesday.
Ashoura commemorates the 7th century death of Imam Hussein,
whose death began the schism between Sunnis and Shiites.
