News: The ring around Uranus is blue. |
Blue ring of Uranus linked to sparkling ice
19:00 06 April 2006
NewScientist.com news service
Stephen Battersby
"Uranus is circled by a blue ring - a colour that makes it almost
unique among planetary rings, which are usually red.
The rare blue hue is probably created by a small moon called Mab that
orbits just inside the ring, according to a team of astronomers led by
Imke de Pater at the University of California in Berkeley, US.
The ring and the moon were only discovered in 2005 by the Hubble Space
Telescope. Now de Pater's team have reported their observations using
the Keck telescope on Hawaii. At visible wavelengths the ring shows up
clearly enough, but it is invisible to a detector sensitive to
infrared light.
The team's explanation is that the outer ring is made of very fine
water ice particles, mostly less than a tenth of a micrometre across.
They are too small to scatter long-wavelength infrared light, but
visible wavelengths can bounce off the particles - especially at the
shorter blue end of the spectrum.
Spewing water
Before this discovery, the only known blue ring was Saturn's E-ring.
It also has a moon orbiting at its heart – Enceladus - which spews out
water vapour to generate the E-ring. Mab is surely too small to
sustain similar activity, being only 15 kilometres across compared to
500 km for Enceladus. Instead meteorite impacts probably chip ice off
the frozen surface to feed the ring.
But the team think that both moons tint their rings in the same way.
While larger bits of ice get swept up again by each moon, the smallest
particles are pushed into slightly different orbits from the moon by
the action of sunlight and magnetic fields, escaping the lunar hoover.
These surviving particles colour each ring blue.
The view will soon be clearer because, as seen from the Earth, the
rings are changing their angle. "In 2007 the ring will be edge on, and
100 times brighter," says de Pater. Then it should be possible to
obtain a better image and confirm the curious colour of Uranus'
outermost ring.

I really wish they'd rename that planet. It's almost more than a man can bear
to resist declaring, "But -I- thought it would be *brown*!" ARRRGGHHH!!

Would you be of the section of the population that pronounces it
"Yer-innis" instead of "Yer-ay-nis"? How about "Hair-issmint" instead
of "Her-*****-Mint" and "He-row-shimma" versus "hee-row-shee-ma?"

Uranus the planet with two possible pronunciations both of the
scatological.
How about "Hair-issmint" instead

The "correct" pronunciation goes:
"Ooo-rah'-nus", with the 'u' in "nus" said like "put".
Which is hardly scatalogical, unless one happens to possess the
sophistication of a 13 year old boy.

You've been peeking!
(Dr. Tony Phillips, a popular official NASA publicist pronounces it
the "Ooo-rah'-nus" style, which when one consider's that it is a Greek
deity, is quite correct.
He oughta know...)

No. Thus, my connundrum. ;-)
How about "Hair-issmint" instead of "Her-*****-Mint"
***** mints, I suspect, would be brown also, no matter how hairy they are.
and "He-row-shimma" versus "hee-row-shee-ma?"
Ummm... Which one is correct? Though I do more of a "hih"-row-shimma than a
"hee"-row-shimma.
Po-tay-to, po-tah-to...
Yup. Them's brown, too. :-#

Cool! Makes me wonder why theists have to make up "mystical" ***** when

One time I came across a 'family photo' of the solar system taken by
Voyager and the planets were all identified. It was lost in a computer
crash and I've never found that pic again.

Agreed 101%!
No, 110.7%! ;)
Compared to their puny, restricted and ineffectual Gods,
this stuff is utterly awe inspiringly huge!
Contemplating the science of this vastness is, I think, the closest
that I can get to a "spiritual" feeling, without the attendent
irrationality inherent in most religions.
Science simply dwarfs any imaginary god.

What is the reasoning that creationists use to explain other planets in
the solar system? Anyone know if there is a standard party line on
this?
