had referred as a Jewish reference originally. I did not mention
Hispanics, and I certainly do not want anybody who speaks Spanish to

Ghetto did come into popular use with the Nazi ghettos of Jews.
Places in the U.S. where people can't speak English generally are
ghettos, or dare I say barrios.
Immigrants are generally poor, and the ones that don't learn English
stay poor. There's probably a direct correlation between how well they
learn to speak English and how successful they become.
Other than his impolite delivery, and his cowardly avoidance of the
major issue, Mexicans and Spanish, what has Newt said that is wrong?

For one thing, it shows that Newt's PhD in history is not worth the
paper it's written if he's dumb enough to fall into that hole.

in America was German.

Because it's a non-issue pretending to be an issue. As you pointed out
above, immigrants have strong financial incentives to learn to speak
English. Immigrants don't ditch everything they have in their home
country just so their kids will grow up poor.
Pretending that Mexian immigrants aren't "assimilating" because the 60
year old abuelas aren't speaking English ignores how immigrants
assimilate. If you look back in history, the first generation
immigrants, be they from Sweden, Germany or China, all speak their
native tongues here. It's their children who lean English.
And all available empirical data shows that the children of these
Mexican immigrants- suprise! are speaking English. How are the Mexican
speaking neighborhoods any more dangerous to the Republic than the
Italian-speaking neighborhoods of years past?

Name one ethnic group, from the Polish to the Italians to the Germans,

and Italian. Go back 120 years, the language of the "ghetto" in
America was Swedish. Go back 150 years, the language of the "ghetto"
in America was German.
Immigrants are generally poor, and the ones that don't learn English
stay poor. There's probably a direct correlation between how well they
learn to speak English and how successful they become.

immigrants, be they from Sweden, Germany or China, all speak their
native tongues here. It's their children who lean English.
And all available empirical data shows that the children of these
Mexican immigrants- suprise! are speaking English. How are the Mexican
speaking neighborhoods any more dangerous to the Republic than the
Italian-speaking neighborhoods of years past?
Before I answer that question, I think what you say is completely
valid and true. But I get the feeling that's not really what's
bothering most people who are having such a big reaction.
The difference is that Mexico is on our border and Italy is across the
ocean. And will Mexico ever improve as long as we are in this kind of
relationship. And what difference would that make to America, the
difference between a prosperous Mexico and one that isn't.

I think you are correct. I think that the questions "Are Mexicans
assimilating fast enough" and "Are there too many Mexicans here" are
two differenr questions that many use one to politely proxy the other.
I think the US attitude towards Mexicans is somewhat schizophrenic: we
don't want you Mexicans browning out our gene pool, but give us more
Eva Longorias and Jessica Albas while you're at it!
Case in point: Josh Gibson of Fox News is concerned to death that
there aren't enough "white" babies to balance out the "hispanic"
babies, conveniently ignoring the fact that "white" and "hispanic"
overlap.
The difference is that Mexico is on our border and Italy is across the
