get off of placidyls he was popping at three times the recommended
dosage--- 1400 milligrams a day. He'd been on a 10-year drug binge,
eating hypnotics and narcotics by the dozen, you poor dope. He wasn't
getting his work done, his speech was slurred, he was acting like a
doddering idiot, and people were talking. By 1981 he was having
trouble thinking and communicating; he was tongue-tied and couldn't
even complete a sentence.

Regular people go to prison for drug abuse; but not supreme court
justices --- they just get a little whispering going and then can check
into a sanitarium to dry out. As he did. But they didn't count on him
