Bush wants power over promotions
By Charlie Savage
Globe Staff / December 15, 2007
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is pushing to
take control of the promotions of military lawyers,
escalating a conflict over the independence of
uniformed attorneys who have repeatedly raised
objections to the White House's policies toward
prisoners in the war on terrorism.

I believe there was once another country which tried this. They had a
term for such "political officers." The term is "Zampolit" and they
were there to secure the loyalty of the military to the Communist
Party (not to the country, but to the Party).
Why is the GOP consistently adopting Stalinist ideology? Aren't they
supposed to be "conservatives"?

Well, the USSR fell so the GOP is trying to "conserve" the amount of
oppressive ideology on the planet...

Weird he's still pushing to increase the power of an office he's going to

I wonder if the Democrats can resist the temptation to hold on to the power
gained. The US (and the world) has a lot to worry about.

That'll be interesting to watch.
I'd love to be able to ask at some debate or other whether the candidates
will promise publicly to divest the office of the president of the powers
Bush has assumed.

Given what we've seen in Congress, I'd say the prospects are dim.

Especially when such a large percentage of the electorate does not seem
capable of seeing the danger. "It's a hard rain that's gonna fall."

Back in college I saw a concert by a humor-oriented
folk singer. He had a cute little ditty about folk
singing in general, which including these words:
I was singing a Bob Dylan song,
But I forgot the 44th verse
So I sang the 22nd,
Twice as fast and in reverse
