YOU aren't over there, hypocrite.
And HE thinks NOBODY should be over there, while YOU keep
insisting
that Americans SHOULD be there.
That's too much for Fred to take in all at once. You need to
break
up
your point into smaller pieces.
Of course, by the time you get to the last piece, he'll have
deliberatly forgotten the first.
I notice that you're not over there either, "Denis".
Did you notice that Denise and Yang oppose the war?
That one never seems to sink in with him. Somehow, don't ask me how,
people who oppose the war but don't sign up for it are "hypocrites".
People who insist that *I* should go because I disagree with them but
who won't go themselves are hypocrites.
If there are any who insist you should go *because* you disagree with
them, then you can try that. The claim is that if you think that the
war is such a good idea you should go. It is an improper argument, but
misconstruing it does not help.
They only say that because I disagree with them. QED.
Nope. They say that because they see a problem with a large number of
people calling for *others* to make sacrifices. They see a problem
with a president sending his drunken daughters to party over seas
instead of asking them to join the army. They see a problem with
leaders calling for war who, when it was their time, had "other
priorities". That is a legitimate issue, what is not legitimate is
making it personal to you.
Now I ask again, and mine is not ad hom, have you counseled anyone
that they should sign up?
No.
I am not asking you about your personal
situation, I accept that you could have any of a large number of very
legitimate reasons to not volunteer and I will not even start to
enquire.
The fact remains that the Army didn't want me. Not in 1978 and certainly
not now.
As I said, I accept that there are a large number of legitimate
potential reasons for your (possible, until now I had no idea) lack of
service. If you want to share, fine, but it is not a requirement.
But it is legitimate to ask if your commitment to the war
extends to encouraging real living people to go and risk their lives
for the effort. Have/would you do that?
No, I have not had occasion to recommend that anyone enlist. That's a
personal decision. I wouldn't *discourage* someone who intended to
enlist.
It is more than a personal decision, but your view here represents
part of the destruction of America started in the Reagan era.
Republicans/conservatives no longer stand for things like country and
community. Sure, they find great importance in the symbols (flags) and
superficial, but when it comes to making sacrifices for the greater
good, they whine that such violates their freedoms. Other people
making sacrifices, sure, but there is somehow no place for notion of
actual responsibility and duty to the country (and no place for the
country's responsibility and duty to the individual). Free (economic)
market is the only ideal.
Fred, if the war is what you claim it is, then it is not just an
individual decision. More important than convincing us is convincing
young people, particularly bright able young people with a good future
ahead of them, to sign up for the war. Like Roosevelt's children, the
children of the powerful now should be in the war zone.

Sorry, I meant Fred's comment that people only say what they say because
they disagree with *him*.
By the way, I do actually think it's legitimate to ask war supporters
what they've done in accordance with their position. War should not be
easy. That makes a nation too willing to use it to "solve" just about
every problem it sees.
I think they should be *at *least willing to see taxes hiked to pay for

I bet they'd be willing to buy War Bonds... but only so

If the government did offer them, they'd only buy them if
the interest rate was high enough.

I agree, but the questions here were limited to asking him why he
wasn't serving and then attacking him for it. There are plenty of
legitimate reasons why someone is not serving (age, previous service,
medical, etc.). That is why I asked him if he had actually encouraged
someone to serve. There are far fewer legitimate reasons to avoid

Yes, but that is not a personal issue. But, for example, supporting
the war and driving a hummer is selfish to the extreme.

I agree, but the questions here were limited to asking him why he

Yes, but that is not a personal issue. But, for example, supporting
the war and driving a hummer is selfish to the extreme.
You mean like Pope Al the Hypocritical who asks everybody *else* to
sacrifice for Greenitude but who burns 20 times the national average
on his electric bill and flies around the world on charter jet
flights? Planting trees doesn't make up for that. Burning "green"

Sorry, but Al does work to balance the equation. No, your demand that
all liberal live like hermits is just silly.
Why? He demands that everybody *else* live like hermits.
Your double standards are showing, Matt.

I do love the part about it's "not a solution" to use green power. This
makes not a lick of sense.
Not to mention the "20 times" figure was derived suspiciously and I
*still* want to know how what is obviously an internal print out of
Gore's home account managed to get to the guy who came up with the
"number". If my electric company started handing out my billing history
to anybody who asked, I'd sue them. I'd also win.
Also ignored by the right whiners is the figures are higher for Gore, in
part, beacuse he voluntarily buys greener power at a substantially higher
than average rate.
Finally, in no way is asking anybody to live like hermits. He's asking
people to do what they *can. And there are a great many things which can
be done cheaply and which, in reducing your power bill, pay for
themselves.
If everybody in the country *just* replaced their incandescents with
CFLs, the impact--nationally--would be dramatic. That was one of the
tactics everybody in California took during the power crisis and it was
then I noticed it made a difference on the bill. Didn't cut in half or
something that dramatic but it was noticeable. I don't use incandescents
anymore, the only thing "cheap" about them is their upfront cost, not
their long term cost. CFLs are higher upfront but chew up much less power
and last for years.
What gets really loopy about this is in a great many cases, what people
are being asked to do will save them money.
Oh, the horror!

Of course, by the time you get to the last piece, he'll have

I notice that you're not over there either, "Denis".
Did you notice that Denise and Yang oppose the war?
That one never seems to sink in with him. Somehow, don't ask me how,
people who oppose the war but don't sign up for it are "hypocrites".
Makes *no* sense whatsoever but, there it is...
I guess it is an extension from their need to call Clinton a draft

Yes, I have. Not to refer to you, not ever. I have used it to refer to
Shrub and to plenty of others. But not to refer to you. In the case of
Shrub it is quite relevant: he worked to avoid combat in a war he
support, combat he was physically and, supposedly, mentally able to
do. It was not an issue of health or sole support for his family or
any such thing. It was simply that he did not wish to risk his life,
but supported others serving and dying. That, that having "other
priorities", makes one a chickenhawk. Now if you were a healthy 20
year old I would wonder about your the depth of your actual support
for the war. But I was not going to enquire and assumed that you had
valid reasons.

You used the term, Matt.
I presume that you agree with the general liberal position about
Vietnam, Matt. If that is the case, then advocating that anybody should
have volunteered to fight in that war, regardless of what you think his
position is or should have been, is hypocritical.
