No nanny problem this time
Michael Chertoff, Bush's new pick to head the Homeland Security department,
doesn't have the same nanny problem as his predecessor, Bernard Kerik, but
he does he seem to have a little trouble remembering the Bill of Rights. An
architect of the USA Patriot Act, Chertoff oversaw the US detention of
hundreds of Muslim and Arab men immediately following 9/11. However, unlike
Kerik and others, he has been publicly critical of the administration's
policy of indefinitely jailing people as "enemy combatants" without giving
the detained access to the courts. While Chertoff's reign as Homeland
Security czar is a little hard to predict, it's likely to be short. Rumors
are that he has his sights on Attorney General and Supreme Court positions.
