'No Sex Day' declared to promote HIV prevention
Atlanta minister wants attention on preventing HIV through abstinence
By DYANA BAGBY
Friday, January 21, 2005
An Atlanta minister used a catchy slogan last week to call attention to
a serious health concern among African Americans and what he says is
the best response - abstinence.
The city of Atlanta celebrated its first "No Sex Day" on Jan. 14 as
a way for organizer Rev. Paul Stillwell, who is gay and HIV positive,
to tout abstinence as the surest way to slow the spread of the deadly
virus, he said.
"We who are HIV positive have to step up to the plate and change our
sexual behavior," Stillwell said. "I wasn't supposed to be here
and I've lost so many friends. We have to keep fighting on behalf of
them."
The most recent statistics show that HIV is a leading cause of death
for African Americans between the ages of 25 and 44, according to the
Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
Two years ago, Stillwell founded the non-profit Neighborhood Institute
to educate inner-city residents about HIV. "No Sex Day" gained
traction when Atlanta City Council member Lamar Willis issued a
proclamation supporting the day and organizers held a public event on
Jan. 14.
Stillwell said future projects will include buses that will roll into
inner-city neighborhoods to offer basic healthcare services including
HIV testing.
Stillwell said he hopes "No Sex Day" becomes an annual event across
the state and nation. Some 60 people gathered in a downtown hotel Jan.
14 for presentations about HIV and ways to prevent its spread, as well
as take part in forums on such topics as "How is HIV Managed?" and
"Taking Responsibility for Your Test Results."
While some people may laugh at the notion of a "No Sex Day," its
message is more serious than holidays like April Fool's Day or
Groundhog Day, said Marc Holt, a political science major at Morehouse
College.
"Who has the audacity to ask us to abstain from the most pleasurable
activity on the planet?" Holt said during the event. "This is a day
simply to inform others and ourselves. And it may very well save
lives."
Willis told the crowd that the event's basic mission attracted his
support. Willis also serves as a board member for the Names Project
Foundation, the Atlanta-based agency that houses the AIDS Memorial
Quilt.
"We do know the primary transmission of HIV is through sex and the
only way to truly respond is through abstinence. How could I pass up
this opportunity?" Willis said.
HIV awareness day
"No Sex Day" comes as HIV agencies in metro Atlanta look ahead to
National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on Feb. 7. Our Common Welfare, a
non-profit organization that offers the state's only drug treatment
facility for persons living with HIV as well as serving minority
populations, is one of 50 groups across the state taking part in events
next month.
Our Common Welfare will have panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt
available for viewing as well as free HIV testing and prevention
services. Other organizations taking part include AID Atlanta, the
Georgia Department of Health, Spelman College and AID Gwinnett.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of National Black HIV/AIDS
Awareness Day, an effort to increase HIV prevention among African
Americans, including promoting getting tested for the virus.
While the day is a nationwide movement, organizers are focusing efforts
in 16 cities with high rates of HIV, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Los
Angeles, New Orleans, New York and Washington, D.C.
According to the CDC, African Americans comprise approximately 12
percent of the U.S. population, but some 38 percent of the AIDS cases.
And in 2002, African Americans accounted for 54 percent of new HIV
infections in the U.S.

Since the minister is HIV+, if he wants to abstain, even from sex
with others who are also HIV+, that's OK with me.
If J. Young, however, thinks sex is a priori not "decent", then he
himself should set an example by abstaining for the rest of his life.
If he claims that gay sex is immoral because the participants are not
marrried when they can't get married if they want to, then he is a
hypocrite.
Of course, many suspect that involuntary abstinence is a large
part of Young's problem. :-)

Yeah, it's just an incredible coincidence that this "minister" is only
directing his message at people who aren't white...looks like he's one of
those crackerheads that's still whining about his forefathers getting their
asses kicked 140 years ago. (I guess I did the right thing by having sex last
Friday -- with my wife, of course, who's as monogamous as I am, and has been
for the seventeen years we've been a team...)

Of course the entire LLL (Looney Liberal Left) will howl that any call
to practice decency for even one day is a hate-filled attack on
homosexuality, but the truth is that if this call for morality is
heeded, there will be 0% chance of contracting any social disease that
day. That my friends, is true love.
What part of "abstinence only doesn't work" are you too stupid to
understand?
Maybe he is what in German is called a Sexmuffel and thinks abstinance
is easy as a result. :-) Sorry there is no English single-word
equivalent.
Sounds fascinating; could you give us a several word definition then?
It's basically someone who is really turned off by sex, and doesn't
want to do it at all. The word is probably used in practice
primarily to disparage someone.

Asexual comes close.

My dictionary translates it as "sexless wonder" as the closest English
equivalent, describing Sexmuffel as a humorous term for someone not
interested in sex. "Asexual" is too clinical a translation,
unfortunately, even though it gets the basic idea across. You can
coin a whole slew of words by adding "muffel" to the end with a
meaning of "person indifferent to ..." and "Muffel" as its own
word translates to "sourpuss" or "grouch". If "sexgrouch" were
an official English word, it would be a good translation.

I've learned something.
My German is good enough that I can get along in the street (or could
the last time I was there, which was almost 25 years ago), but it's
not up to nuances.

Decency means not having sex? That's a pretty fucked-up
definition of "decency".

Well, given that HIV prevention is truly this minister's motivation,
he should be pushing for a Mandatory Lesbian for a Day Day.

Where "pactice decency" should be interpreted the same way that nazis
once practiced decency - by eliminating the undesirables.
