Not a hate crime

His parents thought he was working as a hair stylist on weekends.
But when Prairie Grove, Ark., police responded to a 911 emergency call
at 5 a.m. Sept. 26, they found 13-year-old Jesse Dirkhising on the
floor, unconscious, near death, one of his wrists bound with duct tape.
A half-hour later, he was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Hospital in
Roger.
A police investigation determined young Jesse was repeatedly raped over
a period of hours, including with foreign objects. While enduring this
ordeal, his ankles, knees and wrists were bound in duct tape and he was
gagged and blindfolded. He was tied to a mattress. He may have been
drugged, police say. A sedative called amitryptiline was found in the
home of two men -- Joshua Brown, 22, and David Don Carpenter, 38 --
along with Jesse's body.
There were other drugs, too -- and items commonly used in sexual
bondage. Apparently the boy was left bound and gagged after the last
rape, while his attackers went to get a sandwich to eat.
The cops say two men raped Jesse at least six times. Brown and
Carpenter have each been charged with six counts of rape and capital
murder. Hearings in their case are set for Dec. 8 and Jan. 13-14. The
trial is scheduled for April 10.
Just another brutal local crime, you say? Why is Farah recounting a
police blotter story from Arkansas? I don't know. Something bothers me
about this story. It ought to bother us.
It was big news in Northwest Arkansas, but the story of Jesse
Dirkhising hasn't made a ripple in the national news. I wonder why? I
wonder if it's because the victim is not a part of some politically
protected sub-group, a special class deserving of extra government
privileges? I wonder if it is because the suspects are, indeed, members
of such a group.
Remember how the nation stood riveted to the details of a hideous
murder that took place in Wyoming when a homosexual was tortured to
death? Never mind that the crime had little or nothing to do with the
victim's sexual proclivities. Uh-uh. That didn't matter. This was a
hate crime. New laws were needed. New brainwashing programs must be
introduced into the schools. New sensitivity outreach projects were
required by all media outlets. Bill Clinton sounded off. Janet Reno
chimed in.
And then there was Jesse Dirkhising. There was no hand wringing, no
candlelight marches, no national news coverage for the 13-year-old
victim of homosexual rape and murder. No presidential proclamations --
even though the heinous crime took place in his home state.
Brown and Carpenter have pleaded not guilty to all charges, by the way.
When police got to their home that morning, they were met by a very
upset Carpenter, who repeatedly told the cops, "He's not breathing."
When police asked about the duct tape, Brown told the officers they
were "just playing a game." When questioned further, Brown allegedly
assaulted one of the officers. It was only then that he was arrested.
Apparently the affidavit recounting the crime was so gruesome that
parts of it were sealed to protect the defendants' right to a fair
trial. During a hearing in Bentonville, Carpenter read details of the
complaint against him. As he read, Carpenter repeatedly shook his head
and muttered, "No." Meanwhile, members of Jesse Dirkhising's family sat
weeping, while his mother clutched a teddy bear and a photograph of her
son.
"No one deserves to lose a child in this manner," said prosecuting
attorney Brad Butler.
That is true. But somebody did. Jesse Dirkhising was brutally raped,
tortured and murdered -- for fun, for thrills, for the hell of it,
because it felt good, maybe even because a certain politically
protected lifestyle has been elevated to virtual sainthood.
I don't expect to hear Bill Clinton or Janet Reno weigh in on this one.
It just wouldn't be appropriate. It might offend their core
constituency. After all, 13-year-old boys don't vote anyway. They don't
contribute to political campaigns. They don't march and demand special
rights.
But, in case anyone else is concerned, a fund has been established to
assist the family of Jesse Dirkhising with funeral and related
expenses. Donations may be made to Memorial Trust for Jesse, account
number 600054043, at any Community Bank in the Elkins or Prairie Grove,
Ark., area. Cards may be sent to the family care of the Benton County
Prosecutor's Office, 100 N.E. A Street, Bentonville, Ark., 72712
God bless this little one. May he rest in peace. And may his tormentors
rot in Hell.

Using Jesse Dirkhising:as a Political Football,
Couple Found Guilty of Son's Murder
Court: Judge convicts pair in the strangulation death and torture of the
13-year-old. Sentencing is set for March 16.
By THUY-DOAN LE, Times Staff Writer
The Los Angles Times
3-8-2001
A Los Angeles couple were convicted Wednesday of torturing and murdering
their 13-year-old son, whose nude and scarred body was found in a trash
dump in a Mexican desert three years ago.
Superior Court Judge Curtis B. Rappe found Maria Tinoco, 37, guilty of
first-degree murder for her son Edwin's strangulation death, and her
husband, Saul Tinoco, 39, guilty of second-degree murder.
Both were convicted of torture acts and child abuse involving their son
and their nephew, who lived with them. Saul Tinoco was found guilty of
sodomizing his son, but was acquitted of a charge of lewd conduct with a
child.
The judge heard the case against the Tinocos because they waived their
rights to a jury trial. Maria Tinoco may face 31 years to life in prison
and Saul a possible term of 24 years and four months to life, said Deputy
Dist. Atty. Victor Rodriguez. Sentencing was set for March 16.
"It was a very emotionally charged case, and we thought it would be better
for the judge to deal with," said Ilona Peltyn, Saul Tinoco's attorney,
who said her client was "very disappointed" with the verdict.
Peltyn said she may appeal.
Maria Tinoco's lawyer, Michael Russo, declined to comment.
Rodriguez said the abuse started four months after the boys came from El
Salvador to live with the Tinocos in 1995.
"They started beating both victims because they probably had different
objectives for them, and the abuse became more intense," Rodriguez said.
"It became so frequent and they would laugh at the kids after beating them
up. They would do things like tie up the victim, pour chili sauce on his
eyes and wounds. It was simply sadistic."
Rodriguez said the couple had headed toward Mexico after Maria Tinoco
strangled Edwin with the cord of an electric iron. The nephew, who sat in
the back seat with his cousin, said he died on the way, while they were
driving through downtown Los Angeles.
The Tinocos dumped the nude body near Ciudad Obregon. The body was
discovered in March 1998. Mexican officials could not identify the body,
but said he was a victim of long-term physical abuse.
The case remained unsolved for a year until the nephew walked into the Los
Angeles Police Department's Wilshire Division station and reported what
had happened. Detectives went to the Sonoran desert, where they contacted
their counterparts in Mexico and learned about the corpse in the dump.
The Tinocos' nephew testified during the weeklong trial and was in court
for the verdict.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The L.A. Times as far as I can tell, amd I have done every kind of
websearch that I can think of it, seems to be the only media that covered
this story.
So.., "friend", why didn't you guys ever get up a head of steam over this
case. 13-year old boy. Tortured. Sexually molested. Murdered. Body dumped
in a trash heap. Why no outrage over this kid's death? Why no remebering
the brural cruel death of this child?
That was actually a rhetorical question, because the answer is rather
obvious...you flaming crackpots don't care about Edwin Tinoco's death
because he wasn't killed by a couple of homosexuals. He was killed by his
own parents. And that makes it all right. Doesn't it? Or at any rate...not
exactly newsworthy to slime like you.. ..
Because parents kill their own children in this country every day...and
that sure doesn't raise much of a hue and cry out of the likes of
you...does it? To even be bothered with tragedies like this one, you
people would have to look inside your own glass houses, wouldn't you
(Susan Smith, anyone?)? And that cuts just a little too close to
home...doesn't it guy? Better you make monsters out of other people, then
look at the monsters you've made of yourselves.
You don't give a rat's ***** about Edwin Tinoco...because his brutal death
doesn't exactly make good anti-gay hate propaganda...does it...?
Or are you indeed diverting attention from the real danger to chidren so
that your ilk can continue to kidnap, rape, and kill th cjildren the way
so many are raoed and killed year end and year out in the USA, or the many
children abused by their own HETEROSEXIAL Fathers this year?
You know, its interesting that I saw an interview l with John Walsh (host
of the TV show Americ a's Most Wanted) in which he said that biggest
opponetents of laws that helped to set up and fund things like the center
for Missimg and Exploited Children were AMERICAN CONSERVATIVES!!!
I wonder why?
