You misunderstood. AIUI, he's saying there are no facts supporting
creationism, and that creationists "change the facts" [= falsely deny
the evidence for evolution], and won't change their predetermined
"conclusions" in the face of contrary evidence.

What evidence against evolution? This is a link to a book review on a
creationist webpage. The argument that seems to be presented is that
mutations cannot produce new information. As some of us know, one
type of mutation duplicates an existing gene. That duplicate can then
be modified by point mutations to perform a new function. This is one
way information - in this case defined as the number of genes - can

Mostly it brought yawns when it first came out. Spetner is NOT "highly
qualified." Even in his own specialty of physics he's not that well
known.
And his analysis of probabilities to do with the origin of life is
entirely specious. It completely ignores little things like the fact
that most organisms exist in good-sized populations and reproduce in
greater than (usually vastly greater than) replacement numbers. Instead,
he subtly, using typical creationist rhetoric and sophistry reduces the
population to one and then calculates the probability of evolution in a
population of one. Then, finding it highly improbable, declares
evolution impossible. His bad math is transparent. And he simply fails
to address the problem of life's origin because not enough is known about
it to assign ANY probability to any pathway.
I suppose next you'll be telling me that no event with a probability of
1e-1000 (ten to the minus 1000) can ever occur and I will have to show
you how to produce one AT RANDOM.

Yea, the result is underwhelming. Spetner is plain wrong.
Gene duplication and divergence, and in fact whole-genome duplication
and divergence can produce mass amounts of "new information", whatever
the heck that is. I just call it "new genes" (the whole "information"
thing is just compsci/mathematics people trying to hijack
biology...there is no quantitative and working definition of
"information" in biology).
The whole-genome duplication in yeast, for example, has been published
since 1997, when Wolfe & Sheilds first cataloged the effects of that
genome duplication that resulted in FOUR HUNDRED NEW GENES in one fell
swoop! Just think, this simple organism was able to get four hundred
NEW genes, complete with regulatory regions, with one genome
duplication.
1997 is a long time ago. Why didn't Spetner give up his outdated ideas
at that point? Oh, wait, I forgot, he's a creationist.
Spetner does a good job at hacking away at his own particular
strawman, though.
The work will do nothing better than showing how Spetner can argue
against himself.

There used to be this vaguely sort-of new-agey guy who used
"information" a lot, due to purported insights into the nature of the

What "evidence against evolution" does the author think exists?
Do you personally know of any?
Maybe none is "seen, spoken or heard" simply because there
isn't any. But then, you and your source undoubtedly have
no idea what is or isn't actually "seen, spoken or heard"
in science
- so it will be interesting to see the response
to this devastating assault, by a highly qualified author, on the very core
of evolutionary theory.
Sounds more like an attack on a strawman. Evolutionary biology
doesn't involve everything arising "by chance".

This "devastating assault" is six years old, and hasn't put the slightest
dent in the scientific endeavor.
