Not OT: Rare species spotted in Indiana |
I can't believe I actually saw one! Species Icthyus Darwinicus, the Darwin
Fish. I had to pick my jaw up off the dashboard. It is not indigenous to
central Indiana. It must have come in on a foreign vessel, much like zebra
mussels. If only they reproduced as quickly as zebra mussels. I'm equally
surprised that there weren't bullet holes in the car it was on.

I've seen Darwin Fish and pro Evolution bumper stickers quite often in the
Bloomington area.

We're not all rednecks in Indiana. I've lived here all my life. That
being said however, as much as I'd like to put a Darwin fish on my
car, I would be a bit hesitant due to the fear that some
knuckle-dragger would trash it.
I don't make a secret of my atheism, but I don't parade it around
either. If somebody asks me about it, I don't hide it. It's usually
a non-issue since, unlike many theists, I don't build my life around
my (lack of) belief in a deity.

But since it was in Indiana, the real question is, did it observe Daylight

I see a few Darwin Fish (hmmm I wonder who may have one?) in the northern,
Notre Dame (i.e. Fundy) area. This area is so bad, the Governor was
un-invited as a commencement speaker from his Catholic High School because
of his Pro-Choice political platform. I have also seen a fish labeled
"Truth" eating a Darwin Fish. Irony meters get stuck wide open on that one.
I think there is a tit-for-tat thing going on.
Kind of funny in a Spy-Vs-Spy sort of way.

I know the area well. We used to live about 20 miles west of South Bend. I
was on a project, in the 80's, setting up video for ND's moot court. What a
pain they were to work with!

That's why I put "Not OT:" in the subject line. :)
What is also surprising is that the car was not on a highway, it was on a
residential street. BTW, on the main highway north through here (all roads
lead *away* from Indianapolis) drivers are routinely arrested for "driving
while black". One wonders what happens when you are caught "driving while

Unfortunately that is not the case. Indiana is (arguably) the birthplace of
the KKK. The state is full of rednecks. A lot of local commercials have
spokespersons with heavy twangs in their speech.
In Kokomo (30 miles north of Indianapolis) some years ago they burned down
the house of a boy named Ryan White, who got AIDS from a blood transfusion.
It can be fairly open-minded in the northwest corner of the state, which is
near Chicago. The central and southern parts are not unlike the bible belt
of the South.
Indiana is known for "brain drain". People get a good college education and
then leave the state for more technologically advanced environments. It has
been a major political issue lately.
