AUSTIN, Texas - The Friday night lights in Texas could soon be without
bumpin' and grindin' cheerleaders. Legislation filed by Rep. Al Edwards
would put an end to "sexually suggestive" performances at athletic
events and other extracurricular competitions.
"It's just too sexually oriented, you know, the way they're shaking
their behinds and going on, breaking it down," said Edwards, a 26-year
veteran of the Texas House. "And then we say to them, 'don't get
involved in sex unless it's marriage or love, it's dangerous out there'
and yet the teachers and directors are helping them go through those
kind of gyrations."
Under Edwards' bill, if a school district knowingly permits such a
performance, funds from the state would be reduced in an amount to be
determined by the education commissioner.
Edwards said he filed the bill as a result of several instances of
seeing such ribald performances in his district.
J.M. Farias, owner of Austin Cheer Factory, said cheerleading
aficionados would welcome the law. Cheering competitions, he said,
penalize for suggestive movements or any vulgarity.
"Any coaches that are good won't put that in their routines," he said.
And, most girls cheering on Friday nights were trained by professionals
who know better, he said.
"I don't think this law would really shake the industry at all. In fact,
it would give parents a better feeling, mostly dads and boyfriends,
too," Farias said.
Although cheerleaders must meet the same no-pass, no-play academic
requirements of athletes, cheerleading is not a competition sanctioned
by the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of Texas
high school sports.
The UIL also does not have performance regulations for squads who cheer
for their teams at state championships, said Athletic Coordinator Peter
Contreras.
"I think it should have been cut out a long time ago," Edwards said. "It
surely needs to be toned down."

There's already a way to end "sexy" cheerleading, it's called parenting. Or,
as George Bush would say "par-en-ting".
My daughter is a cheerleader. I don't like the bump and grind routines that
some of the squads do, and I don't like the nasty music some of the girls
would like to use when they do dance routines, so I tell my daughter how I
feel, and I tell the coach feel. If my view is not in the majority, I can
either let it slide, or take my girl off the squad. So I've let some things
slide, and it really has never come close to pulling her off the squad.
Social norms are always changing but are self-regulating to a large extent,
and we do not need to have people wasting time making laws for that. This
guy is just grandstanding for "morality".
But since the subject has been brought up, I wonder how such a law would be
enforced? Surely there would have to be extensive examination of the
evidence. Maybe it's not such a bad idea, teensploitation flick writers can
always use new material.

Yesterday I saw a French documentary called "Outlawing Indecency", about the
rise of conservative Christians in the US basically trying to turn the
country into a Christian version of Taliban occupied Afghanistan. They had
people literally and seriously advocating 6 months prison for anyone wearing
low slung jeans, exposing underwear or butt cracks and about teenagers
committing suicide because they have been put on sex offender registers for
25 years for having consensual sex with girl friends just under the legal
age of consent. There was a shock jock who had to carry a gun with him
because of the serious death threats he received from Christians...as he put
it "I got fined and sacked for saying "*****" on the air, but I can
legally own a machine gun that can take out 100 people!" And nothing is

Nah, that won't be needed, Christians couldn't give a woman an orgasm
even if they spend the preceding week praying to Jebus for help !

Which is exactly the reason! If they can't be in control of a woman's

"Breaking it down"?
He sounds like my old man whenever he tried to say "cool".
<snip>
"I think it should have been cut out a long time ago," Edwards said.
"It
surely needs to be toned down."
Kevin Bacon, please come back! We'll forgive you for making
"Hollow Man"!
Back in December, I saw the Division III NCAA championship game
and noticed the cheerleaders for the two small schools: normal
girls, some weighed more than (gasp!) 120 pounds. The players,
the cheerleaders, the fans all looked like normal people out
there for the fun.
Maybe if they took away the "football factory" intensity from
these high schools, it might take away the need to sell them as
product. That's surely part of why the "sexuality" (if there
is any) has become part of high school cheerleading.
Or maybe that idiot Edwards thinks "Johnny Be Good" represents
all high school football?
