O Holy Night

by William Hopper
As most folks are aware, "Halloween" is a contraction of "All Hallows
Eve." "Hallows" is an archaic form of "holy." So the word Halloween
(the night set aside for demons, witches, vampires, and goblins) means
"Holy Night."
Most modern Christians will tell you that the holiness of this night
has been co-opted over the years by evil influences. Historically,
it's actually the other way around. It was the Catholic Church that
tried to change what they saw as an "evil" festival into a good and
holy Christian celebration. It didn't work.

Jeez, I was just going to commend him for posting something reasonably
on-topic...my guess is that Hopper disagrees that Halloween is a "good and
holy Christian celebration". Like most of the major Christian celebrations
in America, it has been co-opted by commercial interests.
Now where are those Snickers?

Most modern Christians will tell you that the holiness of this night

And the Christians threw away a perfectly good holy day to do so.
It used to be that the Sunday after Pentecost was observed as the "Feast
of the Departed in Christ", the final observance of the Easter Season. It
made for a nice cycle: Jesus dies and is resurrected, the Holy Spirit
descends on the believers and the believers are themselves resurrected.
But a period of about 150 years when the Celtic church held theological
sway was when the Christian calendar was formally revised in to the form
it would eventually have throughout most of Christendom. Under the
influence of Irish and British theologians, the major holy days were fixed
to days belonging to the pagan Celtic calendar. Yule became Christmas,
Easter was fixed to the Spring Equinox (sacred to the goddess Eostar), and
the Feast of the Departed in Christ was moved to the Celtic Samhain, the
Feast of the Dead.
