Intelligent design vs. evolution: Debate lives on in county
By Jack Dew, Berkshire Eagle Staff
Sunday, February 19
Jim and Sissy Hamilton wanted God to be part of their children's education.
That meant that intelligent design — the belief that life is too complex to
be explained by evolution and must have been created by an intelligent
being — must be a core part of the curriculum.
"We didn't expect a secular school system to change for us," Jim Hamilton
said.
So they kept their children out of the Pittsfield public schools. Two are
now in college and a third, Meredith, is 12 years old. All three were
taught at home with special textbooks that describe evolution as a flawed,
incomplete theory that fails to explain much of life.
By taking their children's education into their own hands, the Hamiltons
have become part of the national debate over intelligent design and whether
it should be taught side by side with evolution.
The Hamiltons believe evolution has been disproved repeatedly, and that
Earth is between 8,000 and 12,000 years old, not the 4.5 billion years that
scientists have established. They argue that something as complex as the
human eye is so intricate that it simply could not have arisen through
natural selection, the evolutionary engine that allows organisms better
adapted to their environment to pass on their genetic traits.
.... last year, a federal judge ruled that teaching intelligent design
amounted to teaching religion, not science, and violated the separation of
church and state. ...

Pittsfield, Mass is known for a connection to a post office box and Nemo, The
Destroyer's round-eyed apprentice.
And, of course, for being part of the Chatham, New York, (population: 1,879)
greater metropolitan area.
