Churches oppose abuse-reporting law

The Associated Press
COLUMBUS - Several fundamentalist churches oppose a bill
that would require members of the clergy to report child
abuse, saying the legislation is an unnecessary intrusion
into the separation of church and state.
The bill - supported by mainstream churches, including
Roman Catholics and Methodists - easily passed the Senate
last year but is stalled in a House committee.
Pastors of independent Baptist churches and evangelical
congregations around Ohio say the requirement raises
privacy concerns about pastors' approach to counseling
and even church teachings on corporal punishment.
Ohio law already requires professionals such as doctors,
lawyers, nurses, teachers, social workers and day-
care employees to report suspected child abuse.

Do Catholic priests have to report child abuse they hear of during
confession?

No, and it's been the basis of numerous civil lawsuits and criminal
indictments.

As far as I am aware and Hubby concurred - if a minister in Canada
becomes aware of child abuse s/he MUST by law report it to the
authorities - if s/he does not there are penalties for not coming
foraward. It all comes down to putting the welfare of the children
first before any other consideration. A good thing IMHO

In the documentary "Sins of the Fathers" I saw Christian priests and
their attorneys demanding that divulging the contents of confessions
violates the seperation of Church and State and the supposed "sacity"
of the confessional.
The issue came up heavily because the pedophiles were -- and
presumably still are -- telling each other of their crimes and then
being shipped off to "rehabilitation" so that they could tell the
Judge (if it came to that) that they were sorry, repentant, and had
already been punished and rehabilitated.
"Sins of the Fathers" came out something like 20 years ago, granted.
Maybe things were different then.

Of course - this is a non-catholic church - where there is no formal
"confessional" but the seal of the confessional is supposed to be
sacrosanct and I agree with that for the most part - however when it
comes to kids and their safety I am not so sure the seal of the
confessional should be sealed. Just my opinion and there are years
of Canon Law and Civil case law that tells a different story. Sad that
the Catholic Church cannot look at this issue and do the right thing.
