Object: Oklahoma tries to pass bill for schools teaching of creationism, ID, Jesus Worship
Oklahoma house bill 2107 has been introduced under the complete misnomer
name of the "Academic Freedom Act". The gist of this Jesus bill is to
allow so called designated science teachers to completely ignore science
and teach whatever the hell they want, without any adverse reactions.
The bill has been couched in terms of freedom when it is nothing more
than another attempt to replace science with religious dogma. Calling
this an Academic Freedom bill uses the same tactics as Bush calling his
allowing more pollution by cutting emissions requirements the Clear Skys
Initiative Bill.
Oklahoma house bill 2107
A. Every public school teacher in the State of Oklahoma, shall have the
affirmative right and freedom to present scientific information
pertaining to the full range of scientific views in any curricula or
course of learning.
B. No public school teacher in the State of Oklahoma shall be
terminated, disciplined, or otherwise discriminated against for
presenting scientific information pertaining to the full range of
scientific views in any curricula or course of learning.
C. Students may be evaluated based upon their understanding of course
materials, but no student, in any public school shall be penalized in
any way because the student may subscribe to a particular position on
scientific views.
D. The rights and privileges contained in the Academic Freedom Act apply
when topics are taught that may generate controversy, such as biological
or chemical origins of life. Nothing in this act shall be construed as
requiring or encouraging any change in the state curriculum standards
for public schools.
E. Nothing in this act shall be construed as promoting any religious
doctrine, promoting discrimination for or against a particular set of
religious beliefs, or promoting discrimination for or against religion
or nonreligion.

I like paragraph C. I hope there's at least one high school kid in Oklahoma
smart enough to realize this gives him the freedom to change any formula in
Physics to something more convenient. Start with replacing:
Ke = M * (V^2)
with
Ke = M * V
The explanation for the reaction of any two reagents in Chemistry becomes
"because it is the Will of Thor."
Is math considered a science? Simplification of math to Biblical standards
should make life much easier for all of Oklahoma's students. Assign the
value of 3 to pi. Having to remember 3.14159... always struck me as
inconvenient.
Pass this bill and let the larnin' begin! Yahooooo!

I find it both amazing and disconcerting that so many religious whackos
engage in lies and subterfuge trying to 'force' their religious agenda on
others.
The beauty of science is that it's conclusion are based on tangible physical
evidence - NOT pure faith and false claims of religious leaders.

It would appear that under Paragraph D, teachers don't have the rights to
'Academic Freedom' if the topics don't generate controversy. Also, they
left the ;-) off Paragraph E.

Oklahoma house bill 2107

A. Every public school teacher in the State of Oklahoma, shall have the

ID is not science so this would (should) not allow teaching ID.

B. No public school teacher in the State of Oklahoma shall be
terminated, disciplined, or otherwise discriminated against for
presenting scientific information pertaining to the full range of
scientific views in any curricula or course of learning.

ID is not science so would (should) not be covered.

C. Students may be evaluated based upon their understanding of course
materials, but no student, in any public school shall be penalized in
any way because the student may subscribe to a particular position on
scientific views.

Of course. Students can hold any view they want
as long as they know the course material.

D. The rights and privileges contained in the Academic Freedom Act apply
when topics are taught that may generate controversy, such as biological
or chemical origins of life. Nothing in this act shall be construed as
requiring or encouraging any change in the state curriculum standards
for public schools.

Freedom only in areas that generate controversy?

E. Nothing in this act shall be construed as promoting any religious
doctrine, promoting discrimination for or against a particular set of
religious beliefs, or promoting discrimination for or against religion
or nonreligion.

Teaching ID promotes religion so no teaching ID.

ID is not science so this would (should) not allow teaching ID.

The whole purpose of the introduction of the bill by a rightwing
fundamentalist christian representative is to allow ID to be taught under
their contention that ID is science. The definition of science according to
the bill is just whatever someone wants to thnk science is. So no one can
be fired or disciplined for teaching ID or creationism(no difference) as
science. If this passes then the next step is to make sure the science
teachers aren't science teachers, but graduates of Liberty Hill Bible
college.
