The same group of scientists were predicting an ice age thirty years
ago. They now agree on global warming, but they disagree on what's
causing it. A few fringe scientists say that if it weren't for
greenhouse gases insulating the Earth's surface, the sun would be
heating up things even more. NASA says that every planet in the solar
system is heating up.
With all of these theories, do any of them *really* know what's going
on with respect to global warming?

True, but when research has political or monetary motivation behind
it, dissenting opinions seem to fall to the tyranny of the majority.

Do you have some bizzare notion that the scientists

No, I'm sure they've indoctrinated...I mean, passed the torch to a
younger generation.

No. They only fall to the tyranny of prior knowledge. You are
free to do research into the existance of invisible flying pink bunnies
if you want, but don't expect anybody to bankroll you.

So that applies to the majority but not the minority?

The same group of scientists were predicting an ice age thirty years ago.

You mean those ageless scientists that don't retire nor die?

They now agree on global warming, but they disagree on what's causing it.

No, the consensus is in. Exact numbers aren't to be had but the broad
outlines are.

A few fringe scientists say that if it weren't for greenhouse gases
insulating the Earth's surface, the sun would be heating up things even
more. NASA says that every planet in the solar system is heating up.

With all of these theories, do any of them *really* know what's going on

The "dissent" is coming almost exclusively from energy corporation funded
groups. That alone should tell you something...

Wrong.
In science, consensus of the experts has serious, significant meaning.
It's a big part of how we do science and you and I wouldn't be chattering
on a global electronic network without it.

The "dissent" is coming almost exclusively from energy corporation
funded groups. That alone should tell you something...

Ad hominem.

Not at all, just fact. ExxonMobil's PR company just got caught floating an
anti-Gore video on YouTube.
They have monetary--and *big* money--incentive to muddy the waters on the
matter. It is not ad hom to note that the energy corporations have been
caught more than once backing the "dissent" and that they have billions of
reasons (aka "dollars") to confuse the public debate.

"Media sources" you say?
Funny thing, the "debate" is in the "media" while the peer reviewed,
published papers are solidly on the side of "it's happening and we're
contributing to some as yet undetermined degree."
"Media" also spends days debating bible codes, UFOs, Nostradumbass...

Wrong.

The consensus opinion is that there is a god. Does that
make it so?

In science, consensus of the experts has serious, significant meaning.

Can you use it to alter (say) the boiling point of water?

Not at all, just fact.

OK, I'll rephrase it...
"On the question of the existence of gods, the dissent is coming
almost exclusively from atheists. That should tell you something..."
Can you see it now?

ExxonMobil's PR company just got caught floating an
anti-Gore video on YouTube.

What do you mean by "anti-Gore"? Ad hominem attacks
on Gore, or disputing what Gore has said?
Is Gore infallible now? Has the religion of climate crisis
established itself that quickly?

They have monetary--and *big* money--incentive to muddy the waters on the
matter. It is not ad hom to note that the energy corporations have been
caught more than once backing the "dissent" and that they have billions of

I dissent. (I know I don't "count" - I'm no scientist.) I'm funded but my
telecomms company pension scheme.

I dissent because most of the things I hear on the subject; come from
media sources, are speculative, involve fallacious arguments, are based on
sparce or questionable data, etc..

"Media sources" you say?

Newspapers, tv, internet, etc..

Funny thing, the "debate" is in the "media" while the peer reviewed,
published papers are solidly on the side of "it's happening and we're
contributing to some as yet undetermined degree."

Imagine if you had a theory that there was some benefit to
be had from smoking; do you think you'd get funding anywhere
but from a tobacco company? If you got the funding, did the work
and found the benefit, would you publish? Would it get through
peer review? Would the media herald it? Not a chance!
You'd be villified. That's the trouble with orthodoxy - it's very
resistant to new information that challenges it.

"Media" also spends days debating bible codes, UFOs,
Nostradumbass...

At least we can agree that the media is unreliable.

No, the consensus is in. Exact numbers aren't to be had but the broad
outlines are.

Bandwaggon fallacy.

Wrong.

The consensus opinion is that there is a god. Does that make it so?

Are you really going to try to compare mass, popular opinion to the
consensus of experts?

In science, consensus of the experts has serious, significant meaning.

Can you use it to alter (say) the boiling point of water?

That hasn't anything to do with anything.

It's a big part of how we do science and you and I wouldn't be
chattering on a global electronic network without it.

That's technology, not science.

You *have to be trying to be funny.

The "dissent" is coming almost exclusively from energy corporation
funded groups. That alone should tell you something...

Ad hominem.

Not at all, just fact.

OK, I'll rephrase it...

"On the question of the existence of gods, the dissent is coming almost
exclusively from atheists. That should tell you something..."

Can you see it now?

No. You're trying to compare popular, mass opinion to expert opinion. It
won't wash.

ExxonMobil's PR company just got caught floating an
anti-Gore video on YouTube.

What do you mean by "anti-Gore"? Ad hominem attacks on Gore, or
disputing what Gore has said? Is Gore infallible now? Has the religion
of climate crisis established itself that quickly?

Gore isn't the issue. It's that a corporation is trying to manufacture
"dissent."

They have monetary--and *big* money--incentive to muddy the waters on
the matter. It is not ad hom to note that the energy corporations have
been caught more than once backing the "dissent" and that they have
billions of reasons (aka "dollars") to confuse the public debate.

More ad hominem. If I was an energy Co., I'd save my money: whose going
to stop using oil?

Good thing you're not in charge of the legal system, you'd dismiss every
charge as "ad hominem."

I dissent. (I know I don't "count" - I'm no scientist.) I'm funded
but my telecomms company pension scheme.

"Media sources" you say?

Newspapers, tv, internet, etc..

Yes. Popular mass media. The kind that reports on crop circles and UFOs
and the Loch Ness monster in all seriousness.

Funny thing, the "debate" is in the "media" while the peer reviewed,
published papers are solidly on the side of "it's happening and we're
contributing to some as yet undetermined degree."

You have one big problem.
Science works.
As all human endeavors, we can fumble at times but you cannot, in any
intellectual honest, live in the most advanced civilization of all known
human history and just dismiss as "orthodoxy" or whatever stupid sneers
the process by which we got here.

"Media" also spends days debating bible codes, UFOs, Nostradumbass...

At least we can agree that the media is unreliable.

Well, then, the "media" is where the "dissent" is happening.
There is consensus agreement in the peer reviewed science.
*You seem to want to prefer Chatty Kathy over the experts.

Heh, nay lass. I just lack the will to beat my head

I don't know if you've been here long enough to notice it,

Try actually looking at them when you see them. Shutting your eyes
