So now a new Treasury Dept report states that the ONLY income group to
experience a DECLINE
in income over the last year was the TOP 1%.
So much for another Leftwing, BushHateCult fantasy...

Excellent post Kurt!!
Its truly a travesty when the top 1% fail to compound their hundreds
of millions. Thank the benevolent god - and his banner waving
conservatives - that the poor's income has increased more so than the
top 1%. Now they might be able to buy that fancy name-brand ketchup or
move out of their squalor and into one of those posh duplexes near the
tracks, at which point the top 1% might again see an increase in
income.

The economy doesn't favor the rich, it favors the smart.

No it favours the rich by definition. Capital is needed to make money.
Capital comes from savings so the smaller your income the less you'll
have. The more you have the more you can make. There are plenty of very
intelligent poor and plenty of dumb arse CEOs. You try tracking in the
Kalahari for food. You can't. You're not as smart as the bushmen
hunters. You would be a dumb arse there.
The economy also depends on politics. The more money you have the more
lobbyists you can pay and the more favourable politics you can buy. Why
do you think Kyoto has not been ratified? Nothing to do with what is
smart. Everything to do with big money politics. These faceless men
behind the "grass roots" groups dreaming up reasons not to sign are
selling their own children down the stream. Nothing smart about that.
Sometimes the economy just favours plain luck. Two prospectors for gold
can be equal in every respect. One can have a claim sitting on top of a
huge nugget and the other can have a claim on top of nothing. No amount
of smarts will produce a nugget where none exists. The dumbest people
can make money in a boom and the smartest people can be wiped out in a
depression.
The richest people always imagine they are smarter/ more moral/ more
godly/ more cultured or whatever is valued because it is self justifying
entitlement complex. It's bullocks.

All that's not enough to guarantee a comfortable, much less affluent,

struggling because they've been downsized, rightsized and globalized out
of good jobs by capitalists who were smart enough to rig the system in
their own favor.

To the extent possible, yes we should. This is the only market in the
entire world -- the ENTIRE WORLD! -- in which most consumer goods that
we used to make are now being made somewhere else. We have empty
factories all over this country, and a relatively skilled workforce
(it's aging, but it would only take a few years to get them back up to
speed), and we are capable of building toys that don't contain
Roofies, we are capable of building the best cars in the world, the
best clothes in the world, etc. But instead, we are obsessed with
cheap. So no, instead of paying $600 for a television that will last
20 years, we delight in buying a $300 one that will have to be
replaced in 5-6. Instead of buying a shirt for $25 that will last ten
years, we pay $15 for one that we can wash our car with in 5 years.

The fact is that labor in the USA has to compete with labor elsewhere
in the world and that's probably going to be painful for you guys...

Which guys?

You know, guys with common sense.
He doesn't understand economics, so excuse him.
We don't have to compete on the world market, except for exports. We
have been fed a batch of lies; that all anyone is concerned with is
price, which is simply not true, unless your only life experience is
with Wal-Mart. Our companies have simply given up the fight. We used
to make the best goods in the world, and were a model of
manufacturing, until the "conventional wisdom" changed, and price
became the sole focus. it's not the consumer that obsesses over price
only; it's the business owner. If we still made the best products, and
they were a little more expensive, companies could make a decent
living. if US car companies were agile enough to make fuel efficient
cars that could sell in other countries, we wouldn't have Ford and GM
reporting multi-billion dollar losses.
We are starting to see the serious consequences of importing pretty
much everything we consume now. First our pets die, then our kids die,
then we die... all to save a couple of bucks here and there.
The wingnut way has to be over. I want to see more American companies
take a chance and start manufacturing stuff again. I have some Revere
Ware that my mother bought right after she married my father. They
would have shared their 50th anniversary this past May, if she had
lived. But her pots and pans live on. Try to get anything you buy at
Wal-Mart to last for 50 years. I think it's time we started gearing up
our own factories, and making goods for ourselves, and sell the excess
overseas, which is how it's supposed to work, anyway. The Chinese can
still sell stuff here, and if someone wants to buy a spatula for $1 at
the dollar store, more power to them. But I like to buy the better
quality stuff, that lasts a while, and I'd like it to be made here. it
really ticks me off when I see goods in higher end stores, selling for
double or triple the price, when they come from the same country. I
think it's time we changed our thinking back to the way it used to be.
Let the cheapskates buy the Chinese crap; I'd rather pay a little more
and buy American, from a union shop...

What's you point?

Do you think this means Bush didn't rig the economy to favor the rich?

In what way?

The economy doesn't favor the rich, it favors the smart.

Ok, if you mean smart enough to rig the system to protect the rich.

A former colleague of mine claims to have partied with the people who are
now top Treasury Department officials. He claims, among other things, they
had these pot parties where they'd keep two joints going around in
different directions. Among their other mental feats, they could discuss
any geopolitical context by speaking only Firesign Theatre quotes.

I should hope to say so.... there's nothing left in the US to "invest" in
any longer, and the US Dollar is worth only 70% of what it was when
George W. Bush took office... so yes... it's not hard to see that even
the ultra rich aren't exactly "worth" the same as what they were when
the below "C" average, special grant, college cheerleader, military
deserter, undeservedly stole the office of the presidency using Ken
Lay's illegitimately gained money, lawyers, and jet planes.

Ooops.... the ONLY group? Wow... what a crock of *****.
Where do you find this tripe ??
Unless you're considering that about 11% of the US labor force didn't
actually decline in income, but rather lost ALL of their income entirely.

If those numbers are accurate, I wonder why the Wall Street Journal
published
an article on October 12, 2007 about the gap between the wealthy and
the non-wealthy
based on data from 2005.

Larry

It's also for a 10 year period (1996-2005), not one year, and it uses
the tax returns of the same 96,700 people. It covers the period from
the height of the tech boom to 2005, and it doesn't include deferred
compensation, stock options or any number of "creative" compensation
methods.

Actually, I just checked, and what a crock!

They used INCOME TAX RETURNS!!
You know, those pieces of paper that don't include deferred
compensation or stock options? THOSE tax returns...
And it's not for one year; it's from 1996 to 2005, and they use
constant 2005 dollars. (ahem) IOW, the beginning period included all
those dot-com millionaires who got smacked when the bubble burst...
Seriously... constant 2005 dollars?
Good lord...

I wonder if a Shook, the business expert has ever figured out what the
term negative equity means..
"Yeah. If you bought the stock at $50 a share and it's now worth $25,
the shares have a negative equity of 50%. I mean, DUH! You buy a share
of stock in the hope that each share will develop a positive equity,
right? Well, a loss is negative equity."
-- Milt.Shook
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.society.liberalism/msg/cdf601a5bedc09d4?hl=en&
Or what a margin call is...
"When you're margin is called, that's a liability, not an asset. If
you have an account with $100,000 in it, and you borrow $10,000 to
buy with, you only have $100,000 in assets; until you pay the loan,
that $10,000 is not an asset; it's a liability. When the margin is
called (for shits and giggles, let's say for the full amount of
$10,000), there is no way to say that you haven't lost $10,000. In
fact, you're actually out $20,000, because you're out the $10,000
for the loan and the $10,000 to call the margin."
-- Milt Shook Apr 2007
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.impeach.bush/msg/a39f580c3012e718?hl=en&
....and Milt hasn't yet explained how a $10,000 margin call will result
in a $20,000 loss, presumably above and beyond whatever loss of market
value in stock precipitated the margin call....
