And so it stands.

For now. The SCOTUS wisely decided to leave this issue for a saner time.
They even came up with a good reason. Considering the current political
situation both in the U.S.A. and abroad this is not a good time to bring
this case before the Court. If they rule against the phrase Bush may
declare them anti-American and probably try to have them arrested as
terrorists.

That's BS. This is EXACTLY the time this needed to be brought before the court.
Religious terrorism needs to be fought everywhere, no matter if the terrorists
are Al-Qaeda or our own government. The Court when given a chance to fight
terrorism ran and hid, just like the rest of the GOP.
We could have shown ourselves as a country truly committed to fighting the
inherent evil that is government mandated religious fundamentalism. Instead,
the Court embraced it and rejected the principles of the founders.
It is a sad day for America. It is a sad day for freedom. But it is a good day
for terrorists. I'm sure Osama was smiling when he heard the news.

The words stand for now, but only because the Supreme Court ruled that the

not decide on the Constitutionality of the the words.

Actually, conservatives have tried to ban it for that very reason. It is the
modern neo-conservatives, who themselves are the biggest proponents of
absolutism, who are its biggest supporters.

On the flimsiest of technicalities.
Right now, there are two separate tracks that are about to climb
to the Supreme Court summit. One of them will be a challenge to the
pledge and the motto that will not have any such technicalities...
... and the other will state that when a lower court issues an
order giving parents joint decision making responsibilities with respect
to a child's religious education, those parents have the right and
responsibility to make those decisions jointly.

It's indeed quite far-fetched. They're basically stigmatizing
non-custodial parents, telling them they have no right at all in their
kid's education.
