Kansas counseling couple jailed
WICHITA, Kan., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A Wichita, Kan., husband and wife
convicted of sexually mistreating mentally ill patients in their care
were sentenced to prison terms.
U.S. District Judge Judge Monti Belot sentenced Arlan Kaufman, 69, to 30
years in prison, and his 62-year-old registered nurse wife, Linda
Kaufman, to seven years as an accomplice in a scheme of sexual abuse at
group homes that lasted for decades, the Wichita Eagle reported
Wednesday.
Sentencing followed a five-week federal trial in Wichita that ended in
November, in which testimony emerged the couple had videotaped their
residents working nude on a farm the Kaufmans owned and recording them
masturbating.
Kaufman insisted he was offering therapy to the residents, and said such
practices were kept hidden out of respect for their privacy.
In sentencing the couple, Belot expressed his disgust with the evidence.
"The only thing I could think of that's anything worse is if these were
crimes against children," the judge said.
