OKOLONA - Shawn Bigham, a former New Houlka police officer and First
Baptist Church youth minister, was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in
prison.
Bigham confessed and pleaded guilty to one count each of sexual
battery and touching a child for lustful purposes between August and
October 2004. In return his guilty pleas, eight other counts were
dropped.
The victim, now 17, was a member of Bigham's church youth group. The
inappropriate relationship that developed between the two was
conducted through Internet chats and e-mail, as well as in person,
officials reported.
Circuit Judge Andy Howorth said Bigham must serve every day of the
eight-year sentence and be under supervised probation for five years
after his release.
