None of the stories revealed that Scott Heldreth, a religious activist

until The Charlotte Observer mentioned it on Sunday

Online research shows that Heldreth was arrested after an incident at
Ohio University and charged with two counts of rape and one count of
kidnapping.

It's a complete freakshow. For instance:
Bill Tierney, now protesting outside the hospice, tortued people in Iraq
during his service there, and says he received the location of the Iraqi
WMD from God during prayer: <http://billmon.org/archives/001784.html>

You mean there actually ARE such things as "sane Republicans"?
Actually, I jest. I realize that there is a fairly large segment along the
left edge (moderates) of the Republican party, my son-in-law included, who
register and vote Republican, but find themselves holding their noses when
they do so at this point. Then, of course, there is that small segment on
the right edge who actually are able to benefit from the policies that
Republicans typically promote. I really can't fault them for voting for
their own self-interests.
Finally, the bulk of the GOP - people in the middle of the party who
actually believe that the GOP is working for their interests, when in fact
it's not. These naive folks will argue ad infinitum, basing their arguments
on lies and distortions, heard or seen from right-wing sources, without ever
bothering to find out the facts. There are few things more frustrating than
trying to discuss things with folks who take an attitude of "I heard/saw
this on [Rush/Fox News/etc.] and believe what I believe, so don't go
confusing me with facts".
The first group can be swayed. The second group cannot. The third group
needs to become better informed before the GOP can progress towards anything
other than a mean-spirited hate group.

Actually, I jest. I realize that there is a fairly large segment along

this actually says a lot about your beliefs and visions moreso than repubs
or democrats
"interests"
i don't vote (primarily) for a party because it works for my interests
i vote when they work to embody my PRINCIPLES
principles are often contrary to interests
to use an extreme example, it would be one of my interests (it would benefit
me) if laws were passed that benefited me and/or rescinded that did not
benefit me, in regards to taxes, personal freedoms, etc.
it does not follow that i therefore suppor those laws., or even worse, that
i would support judicial activism that claimed that these laws were
constitutionally mandated to protect rights (maybe rights that come from a
penumbra or emanation) :)
it would also benefit me if the const. were "different" in some respects.
but i'd rather have judiciary that rules on the const. as it is, vs, how i
wish it was
it is very telling that you concentrate on INTERESTS
for me at least (and i usually vote republican), it's about principles
(first), policies (2nd) and interests 3rd.
and when interests conflict with principles (and the rule of law, etc) the
latter SHOULD win out
this is actually one of the criticism of (direct to the most extent)
democracy, is that sooner or later people figger out that they can just vote
themselves largesse, so to speak.
people who vote primarily on interests are essentially being selfish vs.
principled.
that's apparently how you think people vote, and how they should vote
whit

i don't vote (primarily) for a party because it works for my interests

i vote when they work to embody my PRINCIPLES

principles are often contrary to interests

You have, essentially, reinforced my argument. Republicans tend to view
their own self-interest as a principle. The entire "trickle-down" theory of
economics (or supply-side economics, as it came to be known under Reagan)
incorporates this concept. The theory is that a tax cut that directly
benefits the very rich will ultimately benefit society as a whole, since
with more after-tax money available to them, the rich will invest more,
which creates jobs, which benefits the working class, and thus society as a
whole. The reality is that only a small percentage of the increased
after-tax income of the rich goes into helping the economy, and virtually
none of it ever trickles down to the working class. Meanwhile the economy
suffers because of the reduced revenue by the government, often compensated
for by other taxes in other areas (often regressive taxes) that place
additional burdens on the middle class.
The GOP has been remarkably successful in "selling" the concept that
reducing taxes on the rich, because of the nonexistent successes of
trickle-down economics, is such a good thing that it should be a "principle"
that all Americans should embrace. They propagandize the argument to the
point where many middle-income party members accept as a firmly held
"principle" that tax cuts for the rich are a good thing because they're in
the best "interests" of society as a whole, when in fact they hurt society
AND the very rank-and-file Republicans that so vocally support them.

And that's EXACTLY THE PROBLEM with having the religious right in power.
They've demonstrated that they don't really care about their own
principles, beyond the acquisition of power.

I just love that Republicans always call thinking before you do
something "elitism"! Do they sit around dreaming up ways to make
themselves sound stupid? So it is elitist to insist on a shread of
rationality? You guys make a joke of yourselves. It's a good thing

Isn't your use of two forms of the word elite at least partisan? And
possibly elitist as well, in the very sense you've used it. Its use in
connection with positions taken by Democrats is an attempt to play into
the usual American tendency toward anti-intellectualism, and it serves
no useful purpose in a respectful discussion. I mean no disrespect to
you personally, but I'd like to encourage you to consider who you've
heard using the term in this particular context and whether these
people can fairly be considered anything less than partisan.

You can bet on it.

I haven't seen any stories which address this one way or another.

So?

So why are you intent on saying he's a Christian if he might not be?

Fundies not only have the motivation, the drooling morons have been
deliberately stirred up. Combine that with decades of history and mix
with high percentages of citizens being of the Xtian superstition.
Factor in Flori-DUH's being a 'fundy central' and there's all the
reason in the world for me to make the statement; "You can bet on it."
Of course, YMMV.

*shrug* I guess I'm not happy to see people make that kind of
assumption. YMMV, as well.

LOL! Of course no similar assumption would ever be made by a
fundamentalist theist. The difference between being realistic and
being paranoid - according to whom?

Who cares if they would or not? If it's a stupid mistake, it's a stupid
mistake.

Well, if you want to base your own integrity on someone else's paranoia,
then you might have a point. But you aren't even doing that; you're
basing your integrity on an *assumption* about the people you oppose.

You're right, and I owe you an apology. I wasn't familiar with your
name, and I failed to notice it on earlier posts as I read through the
thread. I took your reaction for that of a theist telling an atheist
what he should think and reacted in something like the way an Irish
person might if an English person told him he had no right to be
offended by drunken Irishman jokes. The analogy isn't perfect, I know,
but it boils down to a kind of parochial thing. If you're one of us,
you have a right to criticize; if you're not, expect your criticism to
be suspect no matter how valid it is. Despite my best efforts to be
unbiased and open minded, my emotions occasionally overcome my
intellect.

It's big of you to apologize. I just don't see the value in assuming the
guy's a Christian because he did something naughty.
