The former pastor of a Lansdale church has admitted in court that he
had sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl who was a parishioner and
went on youth group trips he supervised.
Charles D. Smith Jr., 44, who now lives in New Jersey, pleaded guilty
Friday in Montgomery County Court to one count of involuntary deviate
sexual intercourse. He had performed sex acts on the girl and e-mailed
her pornography.
Assistant District Attorney Barbara Ashcroft chided Smith for abusing
his position as minister and youth leader at North Penn Church of
Christ.
''This defendant was a mentor, and he violated the trust of these
young girls,'' Ashcroft said Tuesday.
Smith, who lived in Franconia Township at the time, cooperated with
authorities after he was first questioned on May 26.
He remains free on $10,000 bail on the condition he not contact the
girl or anyone else younger than 18. He faces up to eight years in
prison and will be sentenced within 90 days, giving the state Sexual
Predator Assessment Board time to determine whether he is a sexually
violent predator. Ashcroft said she will ''seek a substantial state
sentence.''
Smith served as pastor of the 150-member church at 423 Derstine Ave.
for 15 years and youth leader for three. He was dismissed May 28 after
the allegations surfaced.
The congregation, which last month completed a planned move to a new
building in North Wales, continues to deal with grief as a result of
Smith's actions.
Counselors have come to the church on several Sundays since Smith's
arrest, and church officials have offered counseling to anyone who
wants it, church elder Dave Garrett said.
''It's been a tough time for all of us,'' Garrett said. ''As time goes
on, we're moving forward and healing. It's just one of those things
you never expect will happen.''
The case against Smith began to unfold in May when the girl told a
school counselor she had sexual relations with Smith, then told
Lansdale police she exchanged sexually explicit e-mails, pornographic
images and instant messages with him beginning in September 2004,
police said.
The girl told police that while at a church event at Smith's home in
October 2004, he followed her into the woods and touched her. She also
said Smith touched her during a visit to a Mifflin County farm a month
later.
On April 13, Smith was alone with the girl at the church when they
performed various sex acts, police said.
After the girl reported the incident to police, another 15-year-old
girl who also was a member of Smith's youth group told police he had
touched her and exchanged sexually explicit e-mails with her.
Police interviewed Smith on May 26 and said he admitted touching the
girls and sending them pornography.
Ashcroft said she is not pursuing charges in the second case because
she already got a conviction on the most serious charge against Smith.
