Pastor gets 15 years for fondling two sisters

HITCHCOCK — Any church services Jonathan Tyrone Anderson attends in
the next several years will be in a prison chapel.
Jurors in the 405th State District Court found Anderson, a Texas City
resident and associate pastor at Faith Community Church, guilty of
molesting two girls from 2000 to 2002. The verdict came shortly after
2 p.m. Friday.
Anderson’s wife sobbed as defense attorney Ray Castro asked visiting
Judge Henry Dalehite to poll each juror to confirm the verdict.
The victims, ages 15 and 17, are sisters. About three hours after the
guilty verdict, the jury sentenced Anderson to 15 years in prison for
each of the two indecency charges. The sentences run concurrently.
Anderson denied ever touching either child, but prosecutor Mo Ibrahim
told jurors in closing arguments Friday morning that they had no
reason to lie. He noted that the girls did not tell their mother about
the abuse until 2003, a year after the family had moved to Dallas.
“Those two girls should go to Hollywood and write scripts, because if
they can think up those kinds of lies off the top of their heads, with
such detail, then wow,” said Ibrahim, first assistant district
attorney.
The girls both testified that Anderson fondled them on numerous
occasions at their home, at his home and at the church. The older girl
testified Thursday that she waited so long to tell someone because “I
didn’t think they would believe a child over a pastor.”
The child said she only told her mother after her mother told her she
had also suffered sexual abuse as a child.
After the conviction, Castro asked the jury to give Anderson
probation, which Anderson received in 1992 for sexually assaulting a
child in Montgomery County. Ibrahim said probation was obviously not a
deterrent for Anderson.
“Before the time of his probation had even expired, he was well on his
way to molesting two more,” he said.
Castro told jurors that putting Anderson in prison would devastate his
wife and two children.
Ibrahim offered his sympathies to Anderson’s family, but accused
Anderson of trying to use them as a shield against his just
punishment.
“He wasn’t thinking about his family when he committed these acts,”
Ibrahim said. “And now to say we should spare him for his family’s
sake, it’s not fair to place that burden on a jury.”
Anderson will remain in prison at least until January 2013, when he
becomes eligible for parole. He turns 33 Tuesday.
