Oops, Yet Another Catholic Priest Setenced for Molesting Little Kids |

WILKES-BARRE -- A diocesan priest was sentenced to five years
probation Wednesday after admitting to sexually assaulting a teenage
boy while serving at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Duryea.
Albert M. Liberatore Jr., 41, Scranton, pleaded guilty to three counts
each of indecent assault and corruption of minors, and one count each
of endangering the welfare of children and furnishing alcohol to
minors.

Prosecutors said no sentencing deal was made with Mr. Liberatore's
lawyers, Joseph Cosgrove and Larry Moran.
First Assistant District Attorney Jacqueline Musto Carroll said
sentencing was at the discretion of Luzerne County President Judge
Michael Conahan and that criminal offenses did not meet the criteria
of the state's Megan's Law.
District Attorney David W. Lupas said the victim, now 20, was
satisfied with Mr. Liberatore's guilty plea.
Mr. Lupas said the offenses against the victim began in 1999 when he
was 14 and continued for more than three years. He said Mr. Liberatore
would have been evaluated as a sexual offender under Megan's Law if
the victim had been 13-years-old when the sexual assaults began.
Ms. Musto Carroll said the victim was ready and willing to testify if
the case went to trial.
"It's a tremendous relief that he doesn't have to go to trial," Ms.
Musto Carroll said.
The Diocese of Scranton has defrocked Mr. Liberatore but not yet taken
formal steps to remove him as a priest. Diocesan officials notified
authorities on May 17, 2004. An investigation resulted in his arrest
on July 15.
According to court records, the victim said he was a 13-year-old altar
boy at Sacred Heart of Jesus when Mr. Liberatore became the parish
pastor.
In 1999, Mr. Liberatore invited the victim, then an 8th grader, to the
parish's rectory to watch movies. The victim told authorities that
when he slept over at the rectory, he slept in the same bed as the Mr.
Liberatore. The victim said that he slept in the rectory twice a week
for three years and that Mr. Liberatore told the victim not to tell
his mother or anyone about the sleeping arrangements, according to the
court records.
Many times when the victim slept over, the victim said Mr. Liberatore
would take him to New York City where they patronized gay bars.
Mr. Liberatore was charged by the Manhattan district attorney's office
with sodomy and two counts of sexual abuse. His trial is scheduled for
June 15.
