From the article:
-----------------------------------
DOMINIC A. SISTI
Jan 1, 2006 ? Judge Jones' vehement denunciation of the aspirations of the
intelligent design movement should have been the death nail. Yet, nationwide,
creationists continue to squirm into science classrooms.
Readers who are somewhat sympathetic to the ID movement might be asking: Is it
really worth the fight? Why not just allow for a mention of ID? Why should
anyone care about the legal and philosophical battle over teaching intelligent
design and creationism as alternatives to evolution?
Infectious disease, that's why.

I have read the full article. In actual fact a virus that does not kill
is in fact a lot "fitter" than one that does. Fitness is a sniffly nose
that you go to work with, thereby infecting lots of other people. In a
similar way a good STD allows you to sleep with lots of people before
any symptoms show. - like Chalmydia
In acual fact the evolution of resistance to antiviral drigs, and that
of bacteria to antibiotics follows closely the "irreducibility
criterion", or the number of simultaneous modifications needed in DNA
to achieve resistance. In fact attemptring to compute irreducibility is
a good discipline to have. Mind it sheds very little light on what can
happen to 10^20 individuals in 10^12 generations.
The thing which frightens me the most is the fact that Evolution has
kept diseases relatively mild. Some military designer could conceivably
concoct a "cold" that was lethal. The Duke of Wellington once said of
his men "I don't know what effect they will have on the enemy, but by
God they terrify me. I think the military should terrify us all
particularly in view of the possibility of an accident or a mavarik
scientist. Remember it was US military Anthrax that was used to attack
Congress.
Jack Sarfetti keeps posting on warp drives. Either there is nothing in
it (I myself believe this) or the whole thing is incredibly dangerous,
with the possibility of starting Inflation and destrying the entire
Galaxy, if not the Universe.
