Op-Ed: Teach creation science and evolution |
From the article:
---------------------------
The knowledge base of science has grown at an exponential rate since
the Scope's trial. Evolutionary theory has evolved itself from
Darwin's "adaptation by use," through Neo-Darwinism's "adaptation
through mutations," to today's "punctuated equilibrium" and its
"hopeful monsters." The latter teaches giant mutations that appear all
at once. This theory was developed because former evolutionary
theories could not explain the total non-existence of transitional
forms.
Why not allow both to be taught in our public schools? Show the
strengths and weaknesses of both sides. Let the students use critical
thinking to weigh the evidence. I think that evolution is so weak that
its defenders must censure intelligent design for fear of the truth.
Let science be science, and experiment by considering all the facts.
It is not fair to our children's development to limit their education.
Aren't evolutionists exhibiting a double standard when they are
intolerant of another viewpoint?

Absolutely right, both should be taught in our schools.
Evolution should be taught in science classes, since it
is a scientific theory. Creation should be taught in
Religious Education classes, since it is religious dogma.

"hopeful monsters." The latter teaches giant mutations that appear all

theories could not explain the total non-existence of transitional

The author has two points: first, that apparently legislatures have not
passed laws stating, and courts have not issued judgments decreeing, that
it's actually illegal to teach creationism in public schools. It's only
illegal to require that it be taught. This has little to do with the
scientific validity, or rather lack thereof, of creationism, but the author
does not want to be seen arguing for a defeated position.
Second, the author seems to misunderstand the theory (or theories) to which
he wants alternatives taught. While Gould emphasized, on occasion, sudden
changes in morphology by mutations of regularatory genes, for the most part
the changes in punctuated equilibrium are as small and gradual as in
classical Darwinism. They simply take place in faster succession, and in
isolated local populations while most of the species remains unchanged. Nor
does the author seem to understand the difference between mutations as a
source of new variation for natural selection to act on, and mutation taking
over from natural selection as an explanation.
Make that two and a half points. I have this sneaking suspicion that if one
could clear up the author's misunderstandings of evolutionary theory, he
would still feel that it was intolerant not to seek out and present
antievolutionary views.

Yeah, it would be great -- now if we would only start teaching critical
thinking skills in school.

Poor Geoff, you have been cornered by the usual Roadrunner reply (or
non-reply), that he can't explain anything to you, or answer any question or
criticism, simply because you are not open-minded enough. It's his usual
catch-all tactic.
Literal interpretation of Genesis is not dogma?
If anything could be considered dogma, a religious demand that we believe a
literal interpretation of Genesis, has to be it.

The knowledge base of science has grown at an exponential rate since
the Scope's trial. Evolutionary theory has evolved itself from

Darwin felt that use of an organ or trait would ensure it was passed on
unchanged, and that disuse of an organ would mean it degraded. Lamarck
believed also that traits acquired during one's lifetime would be passed
on to progeny.
This was abandoned in the 1890s through to the 1930s. Weismann opposed
it strongly, and his views have become the prevailing ones, although for
other reasons than he thought. Acc. to Weismann, an organ was maintained
at an adaptive level by selection, and when selection was relaxed, it
degraded, which is almost the complete inverse of Darwin's view. he did,
however, say that Darwin had raised the right questions.

He lives here, but I don't think he's Swedish.
Religion has very little influence in politcs here, a fact I am ever
grateful for. In fact, before I discovered the T.O. website and
newsgroup I had no idea there were people who still believed in the
old biblical creation story. Sure, maybe some nutcases, just like
flat earthists etc, but no more than that.
We have no real fundamentalists in Sweden that I know of, and the
Jehovah's Witnesses etc have exactly zero influence, except in their
own schools of course.
Or maybe I've just lived a very sheltered life.
