Here's a wonderfully light letter from Bishop John Shelby Spong
to that hate filled Christian bigot Jerry Falwell, underscoring
the fact that the Christian Bible does _not_ support the hatred
and demonization of gays.

That was an incredible letter. I wonder if Falwell responded.

By the definition of Falwell, Spong is probably not a Christian. I'll
leave Christian debates to Christians, and recommend nontheists do
likewise. Jerry Falwell is wrong when he advocates state action on a
Christian basis, because we are a secular state and should never act on
a purely Christian basis. When he advocates actions of private
individuals and organizations he is in the right as far as people who
agree with him on essential principles are concerned. Churches have
every right to exclude homosexuals-or heterosexuals!-as their doctrine
and beliefs see fit. Synagogues and Hebrew Associations have every
right to exclude "Messianic Jews" and other troublemakers. Mosques have
every right to exclude infidels, drunks, and eaters of pork. Atheist
associations have every right to exclude closet theists: women's
organizations to exclude men (and vice versa).
To teach otherwise is to teach tyranny, as well as idiocy.

Falwell "has the right" but he is not "in the right." It is one thing for a
cult to prohibit particular behaviors or beliefs from its ranks. However, it's
quite another to blame people who the cult does not approve of for all of the
world's troubles, such as 9/11, without a shred of evidence. These "religious"
opinions must be rebutted. Even Bush criticized Falwell for post 9/11 remarks
he made.

Falwell would no more give up hate than a dope fiend will give up
heroin.
