Opinion: A Country Ruled by Faith |
A Country Ruled by Faith
By Garry Wills
"The right wing in America likes to think that the United States
government was, at its inception, highly religious, specifically
highly Christian, and even more specifically highly biblical. That was
not true of that government or any later government—until 2000, when
the fiction of the past became the reality of the present. George W.
Bush was not only born-again, like Jimmy Carter. His religious
conversion came late, and took place in the political setting of Billy
Graham's ministry to the powerful. He was converted during a stroll
with Graham on his father's Kennebunkport compound. It is true that
Dwight Eisenhower was guided to baptism by Graham. But Eisenhower was
a famous and formed man, the principal military figure of World War
II, the leader of NATO, the president of Columbia University—his
change in religious orientation was just an addition to many prior
achievements. Bush's conversion at a comparatively young stage in his
life was a wrenching away from mainly wasted years. He joined a Bible
study culture in Texas that was unlike anything Eisenhower bought
into...."

Most of our presidents were religious, some much more than others.
(Jefferson and Lincoln were deists.) However religion for them was
personal matter until we got to the present boob. Unlike Bush, his
predecessors did not try to force their beliefs on the nation.

And this 'boob' feels strongly that he is being led by 'God'. *That* should
show the 'faithful' just how easily one can be conned by the clergy. Even a
*President* can be driven to embrace their self-serving delusion. Led by
'God'? Said he felt he was. So what does the 'Pres' say now? That he was
mistaken? Hah! You'll have the cows come home before he admits to *that*.
That 'God' isn't finished 'using' him just yet? Get real. That 'God' *wants*
things this way? Try delusion instead. It answers all the questions.

People who claim that they were led by god are very scary. They believe
that since they are in the right, no one else matters. Whatever they do
is OK, because "God says so".
I too would like to hear what he has to say now that things are falling
apart.

Apparently Lincoln didn't practice any particular religion but whether
or not he believed in a god is still an open question. He did use 'God'
a lot in his speeches though.

Reagan was a sneak, a liar and a boob. He did pave the
way for Shrub. And, he was already ill in his second term.
Reagan is often called "The Great Communicator" but in reality a better
description would be "The Great Salesman." Reagan did indeed transform
the Republican Party away from the limited-government libertarian
conservatism of Goldwater to the big-government, Christian-supremacist,
neo-Stalinist, police-state totalitarianism of the Religious Right (to
include the modern GOPs economic alliance with the People's Republic of
China) and his abilities as a salesman were so skilled that he got
people to genuinely believe that nothing had actually changed. He ran
on a platform of limiting government power and spending and proceeded
to preside over the largest increase in federal spending in US
history...increases unmatched until the reigns of Bush and Bush Jr.
Reagan's big-government spending policies eventually led to the
downfall of his sucessor when Bush Sr. pledged "read my lips, no new
taxes" only to find out that he had no choice but to raise taxes in an
attempt to avoid complete economic collapse.
In a textbook example of doublethink, Republicans have abandoned
conservative ideology so totally that their politicians are attacking
their Democratic opponents for pledging to lower federal spending while
at the same time claiming to run on a limited-government platform
themselves, something that hasn't been true in practice since 1979.
That was unthinkable before Reagan changed the definition of
conservatism though his talent as a professional actor. Even a bad
actor, like Reagan, was head and shoulders beyond his political
contemporaries in his ability to lie convincingly and get people not
only to believe it but beg to be lied to even more.
Ronald Reagan, through his policies, was truly the "King of
big-government" but unlike FDR who was rather open about it, Reagan
covered it over with a slick veneer. He was indeed "great"...in the
same way that Vlad Tepes was "great."

Not to the extent that Dubya did. He used a lot of religious imagery in
his speeches, but he didn't try to implement any faith based nonsense
like the Chimp. Some of the extremists like Robertson and Falwell were
pissed that he didn't do more.
