Object: Opinions wanted...
Well, as you may recall, I recently had a confrontation with a co-
worker (see the 'Typical "Christian" reaction" thread if interested -
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.atheism/browse_frm/thread/1ff0d88c42fe15d4/#).
Well, she's decided to talk to me again and I'm not sure how I should
respond. I have been talking to her the last couple days, but I'm
ambivalent. On one hand, I feel like I should be mature about it and
let bygones be bygones and show her how a decent person should act.
OTOH, I feel like I should do/say something. The problem with that is
that it may be petty and make me and atheists in general look bad.
Opinions?

And then be sure to make fun of her by telling her she is a puppet, or
whatever makes you feel exonerated at the time...
Why be EMBARRASSED about it?????????

Yes, it is ironic for an anonymous person to preach Christianity in an
atheist newsgroup while whining about the bravery and honesty of
others.
Until you are willing to stand up for your own (claimed) beliefs, you
should probably stop nattering at others. Otherwise, people might
start thinking you are nothing more than troll #1,666,427. Gosh, you
wouldn't want that, would you? ;-)

Opinions?

I read that thread, and noticed that this happened in front of
coworkers. Did any of them come up to you after your conversation with her
and confess sympathy?
I'm just curious about that.
Anyway, I work among many degreed Xian people; some of them have the
Xian stuff plastered all over their offices. I would be willing to bet that,
within my office area that I am the only non-believer. None of them have
tried to preach to me. Two - total, have even discussed religion with me and
it wasn't too bad as we ended with agreeing to disagree. I don't think the
others want to talk to me about that subject as I have an "Evolve" coffee
cup on my shelf, and a SCIENCE fish pasted promanantly on my computer.
I think my advice would be, if she would be interested, to send her some
links to some good atheist stuff that doesn't start out by bashing Xian's,
(hard to do as they are sooooooo easy...). Tell her that you prefer not to
discuss religion if it is making you uncomfortable. Tell her it's not
important enough to mess up office chemistry. If she wants to continue, then
by all means go ahead as long as you are sensing that she is at least
considering your points.
If she is non-teachable, and starts to blather about hellfire and such,
then ***** her - she's stepped into evangelism and needs to be spayed.

That's the course you want to pursue, yes.

OTOH, I feel like I should do/say something.

Why? Too often polemics turn people away. A workplace isn't
the proper setting for heated religious debate in any case.
Act kindly (or least professionally) toward this person,
and do not let yourself be drawn into a religious spat. You
might well disabuse him of the notion that outsiders are
other and evil -- he will be forced by circumstance to
reevaluate his biases.

The problem with that is that it may be petty
and make me and atheists in general look bad.

Well, you might want to go easy on the Jesus jokes... ;-)

Christ is on the cross, and Peter is down the hill conforting Mary
Magdelene when he hears a faint voice, "Peter...Peter..."
"I must go and help my saviour," he said and went up the hill, only to
be beaten and kicked back down by the Roman centurions guarding the
cross.
But again he hears, "Peter...Peter..." in even fainter tones, and he
cannot ignore the call.
He limps up the hill, leans a ladder against the cross and is halfway
up when the centurions knock over the ladder, beat him brutally and
toss him back down the hill.
Again, he hears, "Peter...Peter..." even fainter and he cannot sit
idle.
He staggers up the hill, drags himself up the ladder, and finally gets
even with Christ's face.
Just as the centurions are reaching for the ladder, Christ says,
"Peter...I can see your mother's house from here!"

Since she's a co-worker, I'd be civil and not deliberatively provoke
her. If she brings up the subject again herself stand your ground.

The sooner you open up the can of virtual whoop-*****, the better. She
will eventually get around to proselytizing you. When this happens it
will make it much harder to make her go away. ( You realize that the
minute she found out you were an atheist, she wrote you off right?)
Just get out the intellectual 2x4 and be done with it.

Talk to her. If she behaves properly, all is well. If she keeps trying

By all means, be willing to pretend it's not an issue when you talk
about anything else and if it gets contentious, insist that it's a bad
idea to argue religion at work, that it's counter productive. Let her
be the bad guy.

I don't have much experience with office religion discussions, I like
Kate's reply.
Since it's a workplace, IMO the best thing is to politely back out of
the jesus talk, but not concede anything. If she is capable of
discussing it without getting emotional then you can have some fun I'm
sure, however unlikely that's possible for her. A tactic I have
admired is the polite refusal to argue, and then be completely
unresponsive in that exact topic, the person doing that kinda holds
the high ground. Keep communicating nicely on all other topics, so she
has no reason to be hostile.
The dynamic might not let you do that tho.
Acting like there never was a disagreement might be the easiest way to
go.
Personally I think I couldn't stop myself from slipping subtle
smartass comments in when there is no doubt the xtians are the idiots
in current events or whatever the subject is. Not everybody
appreciates it, and it's not the smartest thing to do at work.
Good luck...

Yeah...leave it alone.
She's juiced on relgion.
Trying to turn her around is like trying to forcibly take crack from a
strung out druggie.
When the fight is over you will both end up battered and bruised and

She's brainwashed. I doubt you have the learning in psychology to
reverse it. Agree to differ while respecting each other's point of
view is always a good compromise. Turn the talk round to sex and see
if you have better luck there. She's obviously interested in you or
she wouldn't talk to you after outing yourself as an atheist.
