Orange Co. Deputy Convicted Of Theft

ORLANDO, FL
An Orange County sheriff's deputy is facing jail time after a jury convicted her of
taking money she wasn't entitled to when the National Guard called her to duty.
Tawanda McNeil was indicted on federal embezzlement charges in September in
connection with $23,000 she received by mistake. Jurors found her guilty Tuesday on
six theft counts for pocketing more than $8,200. She was acquitted on 12 other
identical counts.
Prosecutors said she took advantage of an administrative error. McNeil said that she
was paid while training for overseas deployment, and she thought she was on active
duty even though she wasn't working for the National Guard full time.
McNeil, a four-year deputy, has been suspended without pay. An internal investigation
is pending.
Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 10. She remains free on bail
