Origin of the "pointy head"? |
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know where the phrase "pointy little
head" came from? I see it bandied about - largely towards theists - but
really don't know the answer to this. I know they used to have "dunce"
caps that were pointed, but they don't say "your pointy little hat", so I'm
not sure that's it. Just curious. Thank you. ;-)

Dunno if there's a connection, but when the Inquisition was about to burn
you, they'd dress you up in a robe and a pointy hat. I forget what the
significance was, but ya, that's what they were doing back in the 1500's.

There's a genetic disorder that used to be called "pinhead", or rather the
people who had it were called pinheads. I don't know what it's called now,
maybe "microcephalic". Using Greek and Latin makes it sound like somebody
knows something, but it really just means "small head". For some reason the
cranium is vaguely cone shaped and the intellectual capacity is usually (but
not always)pretty low in people with this syndrome. If you've ever seen the
movie _Freaks_, Schlitze was microcephalic, but Zip, although having a
tapered cranium, was not completely slow-witted.
So that's likely where "pointy little head" would have come from, but I'm
not sure about the related term "pointy headed intellectual".

I've always associated "pointy" heads with the insult of "pinhead", but
perhaps the relationship is the opposite of that (i.e. "pinheads" may
derive from "pointy head").
Perhaps it's a crude reference to something like microencephaly.

Some mongoloid idiots are born with very small craniums that
are small and fairly pointy as compared to a normal skull. I suspect
that this phenomenon is the source of "pointed little head"
cracks. Think of Zippy the Pinhead. Pinheads, one popular
in circuses usually had their heads shaved to accent their
pointyness.
