OT - baby rattle snake - Crikey! |
I was in a typical southern California high tech
industrial park walking back to my car.
I rounded the back of my car and
Crikey!, there was a snake by the driver side
door. It was the cutest little
baby rattler. About a foot long and about
1/2 inch diameter. Damn. I wish I had brought
my camera. It looked too small to be
really dangerous but why take chances.
I got my umbrella out of the trunk tried to nudge
it away. It struck at the umbrella. How cute. :)
With a couple more gentle prods it move
away enough that I could get in the driver
side door without placing my ankle in prime
striking distance.
I love nature. :)

I was pottery shard hunting on the east mesa one day.... rolling along
slowly in my SUV....checking the ground. I suddenly heard a strange
rattling sound. Stuck my head further out the window wondering what the
heck was wrong with my vehicle. Then I saw a tiny rattler - all curled
and buzzing furiously at my SUV. Brave little thing!

I was exploring the hills around Box Canyon once when I heard that
telltale rattle. I froze. It was a full-grown, maybe 20 feet away.
Plenty of time to avoid a stike if it launched at me. Funny how God
protects the chosen ones, ain't it?
Er... strike that last comment.

Ah, yes, "red in tooth and claw." This is one of the several thousand
reasons why I have no desire to go camping. Ever.
I was exploring the hills around Box Canyon once when I heard that
telltale rattle. I froze. It was a full-grown, maybe 20 feet away.
Plenty of time to avoid a stike if it launched at me.
The last day of our recent vacation, my wife and I did a couple of short
hikes through part of the John Day Fossil Beds in Oregon. The second hike
was a short loop with signs and explanations along the way. We had gotten
almost all the way through it and were on our way out when I rounded a
bush and suddenly heard that rattle. I didn't know just what it was for
an instant (I just knew it was bad news) and looked around quickly. At
the base of a large boulder perhaps four feet away, max, was a full-grown
rattler, poised and ready to strike.
I quickly evaluated my escape options and then went _back_ around that
bush. :-)
Fortunately my wife was behind me so she was never in any danger. We
hung out for a while, waiting for the rattle to stop and then a little
while longer, before advancing again. By that time the snake had departed
for parts unknown and subsequently so did we.
The interesting thing about that experience was that while it was going on
I was completely calm and dispassionate. I was thinking completely
rationally and logically with no emotion whatsoever. The next week,
though, I was on my way home from work and was thinking about the incident
when I suddenly started feeling all the fear and feelings of near-panic
that I should have felt at the time. I guess I had neatly packaged all
that up to deal with when it was safe, and that's what I did.
Er... strike that last comment.

Too bad you didn't hit the geothermal hotsprings. Some very pretty area
out there, too.

Good for you. Most people would have killed it even if it had been a
harmless garter snake, and in the initial story it would have been 2 inches
in diameter and four feet long.
I've only had one "Big snake in my garage" call where it was about four feet
and quite strong.

It's not that they are more poisonous, it's just that they tend to dump a
full load into anything they bite.
Adults regulate more and in a fair number of cases don't bother to inject
venom in something they can't eat.

Yeah. There are rattlesnakes around here and I've read some
about them. I've read what you are saying. I've also read that if they
strike you
at the least a chunk of your flesh where they hit is going to die,
turn black, and eventually be permanently gone. If they hit a
vein or artery you're toast.
