OT - buying airline tickets |
What's the best way to buy airline tickets
these days? The last time I did was four
years ago and I used Expedia.
I see there is also Travelocity, Orbitz, etc.
(If it makes a difference, I'll be going
from socal to near Munich.)

Go to google and put in the two airport codes. It will bring up several
links to assorted discount ticket web sites, and you can compare. Check
them all.

If you use airport codes, in uppercase, LAX FRA for example it works just fine.
I also noticed your best options are still out of LAX , otherwise you
are locked into the multiple flights and extra airport and plane seat
time.
Oh well. ;)
Expedia looks OK.
As good as any. Enjoy your trip.
Thanks,
rb

Agreed.
Also when checking give yourself alternate dates around your planned
travel days, prices will vary day to day. Try to stay away from
Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Monday flights.
Check the seating plan for seat availability at each vendor, you will
notice it will differ for the same flight with different vendors.
You will find some vendors may not show you all that is available,
especially when there are partner US and foreign carriers. They will
always route you through one, or more of their hub US Cities on the US
airline, and some times not even offer you the foreign airline. (Unless
you actually want to break your trip in one of those cities.)
They will also show the US partner flights as flight numbers for the
foreign airline.
For example, you are travelling LAX to Frankfort (FRA) and the direct
flight giving you the shortest time in the air is with Lufthansa (the
best price with departure on a Thursday/ return on a Wednesday) If you
use a US partner (in this case United or Delta) you will find multiple
stops and plane changes extending your time in aircraft seats and
airport by many hours, not to mention all the related hassles and in
some cases a higher price.
All of that said, enjoy your trip, and if it it a spontaneous Oktober
Fest urge have a great time, if anything else, be careful.

That is *very* true. In general, best rates are if you stay over a
weekend, but that's not universally true.
