Object: OT - cable modem replacement
Road Runner sent me an email saying they want to
swap my cable modem.
Does anybody have any experience with something
like this?
Did you notice any difference in performance,
reliability, features, etc after the swap?
(I suppose it is purely coincidental but I installed
a Netgear router/firewall about a week ago.)

I swapped out a couple of years ago and this one seems to be more
reliable.
I could reset the older one until I got frustrated all to hell and it
still wouldn't work.
I seldom have down time anymore.

Interesting.
The one I have has worked nearly flawlessly for
the 5 years I've had it.
The RD light flashes alot now even when I'm not
downloading anything. When I first got it it was
quiet unless I was downloading. I snooped
the line months ago to see what the traffic was.
I don't remember exactly but it seemed to be
a lot of lower level machines testing the link to the gateway
above them. I think it is just due to a lot more
people in the neighborhood having cable modems.
I guess there is no reason to question the company
replacing the thing. (But there has to be some benefit
to them otherwise they wouldn't be doing it.)
Thanks for you input.

Mine stopped working a few months ago - well, my service went from
350Kb/Sec to about 500 bytes/sec. They swapped out the modem for free, now
I'm running at 500Kb/sec. Anything new has got to be faster, IMHO.

Interesting.
Mine is still working fine.
There has got to be some advantage for Road Runner
if they want to swap it but I suppose there is not
likely to be harm to me.
Your input has been reassuring.

Err, not necessarily. They might just be upgrading their equipment, and
old modem might be incompatible.

My old one was a Toshiba. The new one is an RCA. Frankly, I don't
trust RCA - I had a 35" tube TV that kept blowing a $500 power supply
after the warranty ran out. The third time I hauled it out to the
garage and sold it for $15 at a garage sale. At least the modem comes
free with the service.

Your input has been reassuring.

Thanks.

Any time! :-)

It won't harm you if you don't look directly into the laser when it
scans the room and you might also want consider disconnecting the
video camera and microphone.
Remove the panel on the back with the label that reads "Homeland
Security-BB Enterprises" for easy access.
Unfortunately I haven't located the audio transmitter yet and I'll
admit that the "Be good" and "Obey" trash does get pretty tiresome
after a while but you do sort of get used to it ;-)

Seriously I haven't had any problems with it but my neighbor just
bought a new Apple laptop and can pick up signals and surf the net
from my modem from across the street and inside his house.
Given my ignorance regarding the possibilities that's a bit unnerving.

Just turn on the security features. Most wireless devices allow you to
encrypt your data and exclude unnamed nic addresses.

Yes, but nic addresses are sent in the clear. :( How brazenly idiotic.
The people you really want to keep out find it easy to spoof. OTOH,
while kiddie p0rn providers, and terrorists can find absolutely open
networks why should they bother?

Well here's some strange crap I just discovered.
I don't use the desktop upstairs though my step daughter does.
However tonight I was up there going through some old cds while
cleaning out the computer desk.
First I noticed the right click button on the trackball doesn't work.
I tried the one from my laptop and it also doesn't work upstairs.
One of my image viewers has been uninstalled and so has my zonealarm
firewall.
The excutable files for both programs have also disappeared from my
hard drive as though someone didn't want me to reinstall them.
I checked my laptop to see if the zonealarm was operating and it and
the excutable from the hard drive has also disappeared.
I don't know how long they have been gone.
My step daughter has downloaded a few programs including yahoo
messenger and something called aries I believe which is a file sharing
program.
I wouldn't allow the file sharing program <She was getting music> so I
uninstalled it a few days ago and she uninstalled the yahoo messenger.
There has been a change in the registry on the upstairs computer and
windows can't find a program related to it.
Any ideas?
Can someone be using my computer from outside?
<I sure don't want my door kicked in by the cops at four in the
morning>
I went to the zonealarm site btw and have reinstalled it.
How am I going to straighten this out?

The router I just installed has wireless capability.
I hope to have a laptop with wireless someday but
in the mean time, being security conscious, I made a
point of turning off the wireless feature.
Cheers.

Why not ask them? It's possible they're just doing something in the
interest of good customer service (which is ultimately good for them
in the long run). From that perspective, assuming they're a company
who cares about such thing, it would be to their benefit to equip you
with a faster, more reliable and/or secure modem than the one you
currently have. The best asset any company can have is customer
satisfaction.
