OT - Camera Phones |
Anybody around here have a camera cell phone? One of the stories I'm
working on involves one, and since I don't have one, I wondered what
the current capabilities are. Didn't wanna dig through technical
manuals or sales brochures, so I thought I'd ask here.
A question I have is the following:
Can you snap a picture and upload it to a website with the push of
the phone buttons, or can the picture only be sent to someone you're
currently talking to, or what? How does it work with the different
models?
Anybody around here have experience sending pictures and video
with their cell phones?

I've had one for a few days; so far I know that I can snap a picture and
send it as an email to someone just as an email message: i.e. I just need to
have their email address, and I don't have to be talking to them at the
time. Seems to be fairly instant, too...

Would you mind sending me a picture from your phone to
elroywillis@swbell.net so I can have a look at the incoming email
headers? The picture can be of anything, it doesn't matter.

Yes; it's King's College Chapel, here in Cambridge, UK.
The pics look very nice on a full-size screen; dunno if I'd be prepared to
pay for such a service, though: I myself am not very 'with it', and a bit of
a technophobe, if the truth be told...

Not too bad quality. I wasn't sure what to expect from a cell phone
camera.

I don't actually have any kind of cell phone at all, and my friends
and family call me a weirdo because of it. I'm actually a computer
geek, and usually embrace new gizmos and gadgets, but there's
something about getting a cell phone that turns me off for some
reason.

I have one, but it's currently not working too well (battery holds a charge
for about ten minutes). I am upgrading to a camera phone. I don't use it
too often, but it's great to have if you need it. I'm not married to it
like some people I see. When the contract on my mother's phone expires,
we're going to replace it for one of those four-number programmed kids'
phones to give to the witchling. I know she's young, but she is responsible
and there might be a situation where she could use one.

It holds only four numbers besides 911 - like I would program it with my
work number, my husband's work number, our home number and my mother's
number.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, once my nieces and nephews see it, they're all
going to want one. My sis-in-laws will not be pleased - Oh well, I seem to

I've been shopping around for one of the disposable ones that have
an hour of pre-paid time built in for $20, but when you read the fine
print, the hour expires every 60 days, so you end up paying $120 a
year even if you don't use it.

working on involves one, and since I don't have one, I wondered what
the current capabilities are.
A better option:
The photo-taker had a new model PDA-smartphone, basically a cell phone
that runs MS windows mobile and has all the capabilities of a web-capable
PDA. I don't know of any models that currently have a camera, but it is
not a stretch to assume that such exist (or will very soon.) The
advantage of a PDA is that they all have wireless networking capability.
This would allow someone to take a picture, write the HTML and upload the
photo and page to a webserver with the one device.

Aside from being part of a story idea I'm working on, I think I have
the technical skills to setup an incoming email server which handles
the pictures coming in from cellphone cameras out there, if I can get
a look at the headers.
Another question I had was about the charges that the cell phone
companies charge for sending pictures and videos through cell phones.
Is it separate for voice vs. picture and video, or is it just one big
digital data stream to them?

Yes, charges are separate. Verizon charges us .50 cents per text
message (but it's free if you're "In" - the whole family have Verizon
phones so if we only send stuff to each other it's free.) They charge,
I think, .10 cents per picture. Again, free for the "In" crowd.
Nights and week-ends are always free. I don't know what they charge
for video. Probably more.

Nope. I have a Dell Axim 50; it measures about 4 inches wide by 5.5 inches long
by 3/4 inches thick (going by memory, it's at home and I can't measure it.) It
is smaller than a ST:TNG tricorder. Most likely, a camera lens on such a PDA
would be either on the top edge or on the back; either way, it would be pretty
easy to use unobtrusively, as the person with the camera can easily look like
she is making notes, checking an address or doing some other PDA kind of
activity.
This would allow someone to take a picture, write the HTML and upload
the photo and page to a webserver with the one device.

I don't have data capabilities on my cell, but the last time I looked at plans,
you bought megabytes of bandwith the same way you bought minutes of cell phone
time, ie you paid a flat rate for up to, say, 5 MBs of data transfer, with a
surcharge for anything over that.
The advantage to using a PDA is that it takes no great expertise to use; anyone
with an FTP app, knowledge of Yahoo and a wireless hotspot can do it. A cell
phone scenario requires a lot of advanced planning and a high level of skill to
set up for immediate download.

Not if the person can send the photo to their own personal web space
via some intermediate email address which has a background daemon
process running which scans for new incoming cellphone pics and
publishes them automatically... :)

In Europe you can send photos rather like you send SMS text messages,
it's called MMS I think. I'm no expert as I'm too old - I'll have to
ask my 20-something daughters.

So far, I think web access with cell phones is still a one way street,
download only. I'm not aware of any phone models, or any cellular
carriers, that offer upload capability.
To send pics or video to an individual, you only need their e-mail
address. You don't have to actually be talking to them at the time.

If you can send a picture to an email address, it's only a hop or step
away from having the picture instantly published on the web. A daemon
program which scans for new emails and then creates or updates an html
page is all it would take. A day or two is all it'd take for me,
knowing what I currently know..

Is an address book and abbreviations available? You don't have to
type in the whole e-mail address each time, right?

Right. You can store e-mail addresses in the phone's internal phone
book just like a phone number.
