Object: OT - Garage Sales
Hi,
I'm thinking of having a garage sale to get rid of some stuff I never
use or don't need, and never having held one myself, I wondered if
anyone around here had some advice to give.
One of my main concerns is haggling. I'm thinking of putting up a
sign that says "NO HAGGLING, PRICES FIRM" or something like
that. I hate haggling!
Quite a few of the items are religious things my ex-wife didn't take
when she moved out, like a cross clock and some paintings of
Jesus and Mary. They're just gathering dust, so I figure it's a good
time to get rid of them.

Sounds like you want to actually put the stuff on ebay with a reserve.

Then don't. Chances are you will have a huge pile of stuff left at the end
of teh day and somebody will come by and offer you a small price to get rid
of the stuff.
They will then toss the junk and sell what you couldn't by adding $10.00 to
what you asked and letting people haggle them down $8.00.

Personally I love to haggle, but if you don't well cool. Frankly what's
more important, getting rid of the suff of making that few extra bucks?
Even when selling I accepted the fact that I didn't budge at all prior
to 10am, and was wildly flexible after 1pm. You can put up the sign if
you want, but signs seem to develop a mysterious invisible "except you"
at the bottom that all assholes seem to be able to read. Not that I've
never been builty, I have, but about two dozen times in my life hadly
compares to the times I've seen it done.
No solicitation(except you)
No parking(except you)
Do not Disturb(except you)
All sales cash(except you)
Prior registration required(except you)
Federal Forms Required(except you)
and so forth.

I guess I'm so used to paying full price when I buy most everything I
buy I'm not very good at haggling. Out of my league or something...
Where I was growing up, people referred to haggling as "jewing down,"
and I didn't wanna be like a jew, because the jews killed jesus and
they were untrustworthy, just like the gypsies. Greedy, money
grubbing, etc..

You have to stick to your guns or the sign, else you might be found
out by someone who talked to one of the (except you) people. Once
you create an except you customer, you're in for trouble...
"Bob told me that you gave him 10% off, c'mon, I know you'll do it
if I haggle enough..."

I go to the other side. The purpose is to move ***** you don't want, not
to make a profit on it. I don't put any price tags on anything. Then I
either get questioned "how much", to which I'll pull a figure out of my
*****, or answer "make me an offer" and take it from there. One guy got a
$2,000 portable hot tub I didn't want any more for $75. It even had a
new heater element, replaced under warranty.

I once spent 2 hours in the Grand Bazaar bargaining for a leather coat.
I only walked out once, and the store owner came and coaxed me back.
I was served hot tea and had a grand old time. I finally bought the
coat for 30% of the starting price.
Another time in Guatemala, I bargained for embroidered bags with a 6
year old child. After getting the price down to $20 for 2, I felt bad
and gave her $50 dollars, which was more than her original price. The
look on her face when I told her it was all for her, that I didn't want
change was worth the price.
In Panama, I found that American cigarettes were worth more than money.
Ended up with 2 T-shirts for half a pack, and this was when cigarettes
were cheap.
Okay, so if I came into your garage sale and saw the sign, I wouldn't
bargain. I would just tell you that your stuff was priced too high,
and walk out. You may not get rid of a lot of your junk, but hey if
you don't like bargaining, don't bargain. You don't need to. I, otoh,
think of it as good entertainment.

It's a *garage sale*. People will haggle, no matter how many
signs you post.
Play the game! Let's say your asking price is $20 for a set of
Elvis Presley ice tea glasses -- with decals which morph from
the skinny young Elvis to fat drug-addled Elvis when you pour
cold liquid into them. Since you're asking $20, I'd be willing
to bet you'd accept $15.
So I start low and say, "Jeez, those are surely beautiful
examples of fine dinnerware. But there's guy down the street,
about a mile away, who has the same set of Elvis glasses for $10
at his garage sale. To save myself a trip, though, I'll give you
$12." You say, "Twelve? You're killing me! For $12 I might as
well keep the glasses myself. But I could part with them for
$18." And so forth.
