OT - Keep Adelaide beautiful - send Rummy home |
The real purpose of Australia's anti-terror laws are now revealed. No
right to incite protest. How will Adelaide ever get the smell of
Rumsfeld out of the city? My city is rolling out the red carpet for a
war criminal and now the job of the police is to make sure no awkward
questions are asked about him or his illegal war. They are the
bouncers for a military-industrial mobster.

Dear All
Please find attached and embedded a press release going out tonight
concerning the Thursday 17 November rally in Adelaide against the
presence of Donald Rumsfeld.
We have been denied access to Parliament House steps.
If you thought so called democracy was alive in Australia, think
again.
The rally is ON. We shall not be moved!
Please send this on to your networks; complain to your MP.
We would also like you to know that members of the RRR Committee have
contacted talk back radio on ABC in Adelaide today concerning the
protests. They have been told in one instance "you can talk but you
cannot say anything that will incite violence"; In the second
instance, they were told "you can talk, but if you incite protests, we
will drop you out!"
We are now apparently prohibited from talking publicly about protest.
This is Adelaide, folks, where we are peaceful and quiet with our
rallies, if large!
Press release follows:
RICE RUMSFELD RECEPTION COMMITTEE (RRRC) PRESS RELEASE
_____
Police tell protesters "you will be arrested"
AUTHORITIES MAKE RIGHT TO DISSENT THE ISSUE
Parliament House authorities have denied permission for a protest
rally this Thursday on the steps of Parliament House. The 4.30pm rally
against Donald Rumsfeld and the so-called 'anti-terror' laws is
scheduled to be addressed by Greens MP Kris Hanna and the Democrats
Sandra Kanck. The organisers have been told that police will move in
on protesters present without permission. RRRC spokesperson Mike
Khizam said "this shows why the rally is necessary, and what the
'anti-terror' laws are really about. They are about further eroding
civil rights, especially the right to protest, and not about
protecting Australia."
The terror suspects arrested in Sydney and Melbourne recently were
detected and charged under existing laws - whatever the truth of the
allegations against them, new laws were not needed. Legal experts
including the Law Council of Australia say the new legislation is "so
appalling the government should abandon it."
"And yet we are seeing the influence of these new laws in action even
before they have passed into law", claimed Mr. Khizam. "Donald
Rumsfeld, a man whom many millions of people around the world see as
an international war criminal is coming to Adelaide, and in the name
of 'protecting' him, free speech is being denied and the right to
dissent attacked."
Many people have already been notified about the rally on Parliament
House steps, which is the natural focus of political protest in
Adelaide. Mr. Khizam argued that "it would be a betrayal of our
responsibility to defend civil liberties to simply swallow this
decision. If Parliament steps are barricaded off, we will rally as
close to the site as possible, on the King William Street end of the
barricades."
"Our protest will be non-violent, as we always intended it to be. We
are only a threat to Donald Rumsfeld's political ego. The Federal
government wants to pretend to the US and the world that the whole of
Australia is behind the US war on Iraq and the rest of their generally
aggressive global strategy," said Mr. Khizam. "We are not - and
despite the obstacles being placed in our way, we will show this
peacefully on Thursday".

Dear All
Please find attached and embedded a press release going out tonight
concerning the Thursday 17 November rally in Adelaide against the

We have been denied access to Parliament House steps.
Good news. The decision to ban the protest has been reversed. There
are still some parliamentary representatives who value freedom of
expression. Thank IPU.
From an email ===>
Victory number 1. Now for the war criminals! Late this morning, Dr Bob
Such the Speaker of the House of Assembly gave approval for the anti-
Rumsfeld rally to be held on the steps of Parliament House in
Adelaide. Yesterday, protest organisers were told that approval had
been denied. Since then, there have been significant cries from many
quarters this decision is a denial of civil liberties never before
experienced by South Australian protesters.
The reversal of the decision to deny us the right to gather at
parliament house and voice our dissent =3F the very basis of democracy =3F
is a significant and telling victory. It may seem small, but no
victory against power is insignificant. Our decision to refuse to be
intimidated and to continue with the rally was right and we have been
vindicated by the turn of events. A vindication that echoes the past
victories of countless ordinary people who have struggled for the
dignity and rights of humanity.
The incident is now being presented as a mistaken decision made by a
junior staffer from the office of the speaker, based on uncertain
police advice. We should be under no illusion, though - it was
political. Such bureaucratic "mistakes" do not happen to the
Christmass pageant, or to veterans' marches. They only occur in a
politically charged environment to groups and activities that
represent a political challenge to those in power
People, even junior staffers and radio producers, are clearly feeling
under severe pressure to stifle the expression of serious public
dissent through any process they have available. Understandable when
all such dissent is continually presented by "our" governments and
senior police as dangerous, or undermining the "war on terror". And
this is the climate before the new sedition laws have been passed,
before the new "anti-terror" powers are bought into play. However, the
intervention of Bob Such to overturn the ban is a clear indication
that a counter-pressure exists =3F us, and the community we belong to.
Real heat was being generated by this attempt to stifle our rights of
free speech, and it quickly became clear that it was going to be very
unpopular.
Several serious issues remain to be clarified, though. What advice
from police were the staff of the Speaker's office acting on? Why the
testosterone-laden aggressive tone and attitude adopted by the police
towards our protest. The reports of the council declaring the protest
to be illegal =3F an ongoing concern that all layers of government
believe they have the right to license the exercise of political
freedom as though democracy and liberty were a bureaucratic procedure.
How is it that while the city's councilors cannot even gain access to
their offices because of the security in place for Rumsfeld's visit =3F
surely impacting on their ability to do their jobs as elected
officials =3F unaccountable council employees are free to make political
decisions. Why, given the undoubted scale of this security
operation, are our elected parliamentary representatives supposedly so
unclear on what is going on
We've beaten a petty attempt to stop us having the rally, now let's
see if we can't use that rally to put as big a hole as possible in the
credibility of the war criminals, Donald Rumsfeld, Alexander Downer,
and John Howard and in the anti-terror legislation. Let's show, en
masse, that not only won't we be intimidated, but that we refuse to
allow the oppression and intimidation of others to go unchallenged.
