OT - Report from Adelaide |
I was in the city in the morning to attend a class. A menacing
helicopter buzzed the city incessantly like threatening Big Brother in
the sky. The bouncers for the empire were out in force. Barricades
were placed around the Hyatt Hotel where Donald Rumsfeld was allegedly
staying (but not really as that is believed to be just a decoy) like a
West Bank barrier. Some buildings housing public servants had
arrangements to allow staff to stay away. All this to serve the
imperial messager so he can give his orders to his Australian
quislings.
The main protest occurred at 4.30 in the afternoon and I returned to
the city and made my way to Parliament House. Serval hundred
protesters occupied the steps of the building that has never been
finished (the dome was never built) and a few thousand more stood on
the footpath and road out the front. It was noisy and colourful. The
anti terror bill was as much a topic of the speakers at the rally as
the illegal of the US Defence Secretary. Most speakers spoke about the
near banning of the protest and the prediction of "dangerous"
protestors. The reality could not have been more peaceful. The violent
dangerous ones are those who declared an illegal war against a country
that never threatened Australia, never had WMDs, never had any links
with al Qaida or Osama and did not have international terrorists
within its' borders until the US/British/Australian invasion attracted
them there. There were what seemed to be a couple of agent
provocateurs. One holding a placard that said "US and Australia
standing side by side with a US and an Australian flag. Another
shouted out so loudly that he was fighting, with some success to drown
out the microphone used by the rally speakers. Such is the MO of
rightards. What they lack in argumentive substance they make up for in
volume. The crowd did not fall to the occasion hoped for by the agent
provocateurs but instead rose to the occasion and simply allowed them
to look lonely and silly.
It was noted that the new anti terror laws would make illegal most of
the statements made by the speakers. A member of Parliament, Sandra
Kanck, had visited the Hyatt barricade and asked one of the police
officers there why they were using the barricades which could not hope
to keep the US Defence Secretary in because he was too cunning. She
was asked to give her name, address, and phone number by a another
officer who had no sense of humour. It was resolved that acts of
sedition (free speech) will be committed when the new laws take effect
if that is what is necessary to continue to oppose the war. Tomorrow
the imperial master will be hosted by the town hall where other sleaze
will discuss what else is needed to fight the war on an abstract noun.
Our whole city is disrupted to allow the future slaughter of millions
to be discussed between the world's most dangerous war lord and his
sock puppets. The media was predictably woeful in its' coverage having
a comment from the usual partners in crime speaking of the "warm
welcome most Australians give to this US leader" and no excerpts from
any of the speeches.
In spite of that the secretary was given the reception that the
secretary deserved. The message was that he was not welcome and
neither are the laws that will make opposition to the neocon agenda
illegal. I'm thinking of forming a "decontamination team" to try to
rid Adelaide of the unpleasant odour of this unpleasant war monger.
I'm ashamed that our elected leaders have fallen over each other to
kowtow with each one trying to bow lower than the one before.
Rice did not visit Adelaide. Maybe she had to buy another pair of
shoes. Maybe she still hasn't got the mud out from under her finger
nails from New Orleans. It is hoped that Rumsfeld receives the same
sort of welcome from the people of whatever city he fouls up with his
visits as we tried to give him today. He deserves it. Render unto
Caesar the respect that Caesar merits. Absolutely!
