'Say no' lessons lead to more sex
By Misha Schubert
January 09, 2004
Urging teenagers to "just say no" to adolescent sex just doesn't work.
An evaluation of an "abstinence only" sex education program in the US
has found it failed in its primary objective: the number of children
having sex doubled in the year after the course.
But the study found the course helped increase conversations between
parents and their children about sex.
The comprehensive evaluation of Minnesota's $5million Education Now And
Babies Later program for junior high students - aged 12 to 14 - found
the rate of sexually active students leapt from 5.8per cent to 12.4per
cent after the seminars.
And those who said they were likely to have sex before high school
graduation also nearly doubled - from 9.5per cent to 17per cent.
Australian sex educators said the study reinforced the importance of
teaching children about safe sex, as well as the skills to resist
unwanted pressure to have sex.
Most Australian state schools teach safe-sex practices, but many
religious and independent schools advocate abstinence only, keeping
their students in the dark about how to protect themselves if they do
have sex.
Sexual Health and Family Planning Australia president Lewis Marshall
said it was irresponsible to limit students' education to abstinence.
"These things happen in life, so what you should do is make it as safe
as possible," he said.
"Parents and schools have a responsibility to make sure children are
informed about how to minimise the risk to themselves."

Prohibition of anything humans desire always results in the lack of
control of it.
Look at alcohol prohibition. Didn't work, people died from badly
brewed booze, cops died from bullets, the Mafia became entrenched and
so did bribery. At least the USA was wise enough to repeal it, altho
we are still under the thumb of the wealth and corruption it created.
Same with drug prohibition. The prison industry benefits and cops get
all kinds of new toys, and still get killed. And guess what? Far more
blacks and other minorities are being jailed and used for slave labor
than whites because of drugs that are safer than alcohol and tobacco.

I know. Take a look at Bahrain which is the 'Las Vegas' of the Middle
East. There Muslims can do the things which would get them executed
back home.

No argument. I understand, people can thank the greed of William

Dashiell Hammet makes note of Hearst's dope hysteria in "The Dain Curse".

First I've heard of either the author or the book.

You've never heard of Dashiell Hammett? And here I thought you were an old fart
like me!
He's probably best known for writing a little something called The Maltese
Falcon. I hear they made a movie out of it once.

Now that I've heard of and they did make a movie out of it with Humphrey
Bogart in a title role.

Bogie played the falcon? Just kidding. He was a wonderfully
cheesy private eye who solved the mystery (except for where
the actual falcon was) with no help at all from Mary Astor,
Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Great movie.
Hammett also wrote "The Thin Man" which became one of
my favorite old movie series. I even remember watching the
old "Thin Man" tv series with Peter Lawford when I was a child.

But "The Thin Man" was the name of one of the victims and did not refer to
Nick Charles.
