Object: OT - Ugliest words in the English language
I was thinking about the word 'proselytise'. A word that was added to
my lexicon only after joining aa. It seems one of the ugliest words in
the English Language. I now have a list of three very ugly words.
proselytise
usufruct
geosequestration
Anyone have any other ugly words.

I dislike:
"Labour", "Wormwood", "Thursday", "Belief system", "Beatrice"(the
name), "Primadonna"
I really like "U.K.".
It sounds so cold, modern, pragmatic and earthly, and therefore
comforting.
I dislike ANY word of which the main part is Norman.
So...
Saxon "Freedom" is nicer than Norman "Liberty"
Saxon "Really" is nicer than Norman "Very"
Saxon "Fuction" is nicer than Norman\Latin "Sexual intercourse"
Saxon "Wankage" is nicer than "Masturbation"
Saxon "Thoughtful" is nicer than Norman "Pensive".
"Internet" is nice because it's only the prefix that's Norman.
"Hearty welcome" is nicer than "Cordial reception".

<begin extended blathering>
To me, what can make a word "ugly" and "beautiful" depends on
several things:
1. The definition versus the appearance of the word.
2. The appearance (what letters are used to spell it).
3. The pronunciation (the combinations of sounds).
A definition that befits the word can make it "beautiful", or
maybe appropriate is the right word. "Big" is innappropriate,
while "gigantic", "gargantuan", and "enormous" are appropriate.
"Obfuscate" (to confuse, to make unclear) is almost perfect.
I also find that words with similar looking letters are more
appealling: "syzygy", "Rejkavik", "balloon", and "oboe" are
good examples. Round with round, straight with straight, and
angular with angular makes a word visibly appealling.
Pronunciation is probably the best determiner of what makes a
word beautiful or ugly. Language sounds are very complex, but
you can simplify it into four categories: vowels, and sounds
produced at the front of the mouth, in the mouth, or the back
of the mouth and in the throat.
The most pleasant sounding words have two things: a vowel to
consonant ratio nearing 1:1, and consecutive consonants are
produced by different parts of the mouth. (The length of the
word can also play a part.) When consecutive sounds come
from the same area of the mouth, they sound ugly. Examples:
Beautiful: onomatopaeia, Rejkavik (again!), ameliorate,
Iriquois, atoll, perpendicular, avail, etc.
Ugly: ugly, vulgar, dollar, concur, perplex, activate,
irreverent, colloquialism, hard, grab, etc.
The three words you gave at the top - proselytise, usufruct,
and geosequestration - fit all three properties I mentioned
for "ugly" words. Notice also the large number of "l"'s and
"r"'s in ugly words. They are very hard sounds to combine
with others.
<end extended blathering>
If you disagree, you have that right to be wrong. ^_^ I now
return you to your irregularly scheduled waste of bandwidth.
