OT- bizaar ISP behavior |
5 minutes ago my internet connection started
acting totally dead. Can't get a google page.
Can't get a yahoo page. Can't ping anything/body.
But I can still do usenet. Weird.

Once upon a time in alt.atheism, dear sweet Ron Baker, Pluralitas!
(stoshu@bellsouth.net.pa) made the light shine upon us with this:
5 minutes ago my internet connection started
acting totally dead. Can't get a google page.
Can't get a yahoo page. Can't ping anything/body.
But I can still do usenet. Weird.
Mine was just bought out by Time-Warner. I had a few days of strange
Usenet behovior - posts would disappear and service quit until a few hours
later, then I'd have to re-download all that day's headers. It's all
better now.

Different ports, different protocols. Could be some software changes at
the ISP that specifically effect HTTP/80.
Just for the sake of curiosity, would you try an SSL site, like
https://addons.mozilla.org/ ? I believe that's port 443.

(piggy backing for obvious reasons.)
I rebooted the computer and modem and then I
didn't have anything, and no usenet. (So I couldn't
see your suggestion.)
I called the ISP. First two times it was busy. Third
time there was a recording acknowledging that there
was a problem interfering with service.
By the morning it was working again.
sounds like a DNS issue
Sounds reasonable. Ping would say "Ping request could
not find host blah.com. Please check the name and
try again." I'm no expert but that seems DNS based.
