OT: Breathtaking photo |
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap071119.html
This is a brief time lapse comet photo taken in Alaska. It's so perfect
I find it hard to believe it's not doctored somehow aside from the
obvious filter, but according to the text it's a straight photo.

1) There's no comet in that picture. The "object" by the overexposed
Moon is a lens flare.
2) No filter is in use. That's the actual color of the Aurora, as it
would appear if our eyes worked like still cameras instead of video
cameras.
3) It's not doctored, but light levels were adjusted in Photoshop.
4) Still, it's a damn fine looking photograph.

Absolute bloody and undiluted crap.

3) It's not doctored, but light levels were adjusted in Photoshop.
That much is possibly correct:
Original date/time: 2007:10:04 02:58:35
Exposure time: 30/1
Shutter speed: 30.00
F-stop: 4.0
ISO speed: 3200
Focal length: 12.0000
Flash: Not fired
Exposure mode: Manual
White balance: Auto
Orientation: Top-left
Aperture: 4.0000
Exposure bias: 0.0000
Exposure program: Manual
Digitized date/time: 2007:10:04 02:58:35
Modified date/time: 2007:10:04 04:50:08
User comment:
Custom rendered: Normal
Scene capture type: Standard
Camera make: Canon
Camera model: Canon EOS 20D
X resolution: 72.0000
Y resolution: 72.0000
Resolution unit: Inches
Camera version: Adobe Photoshop CS2 Windows
Colorspace: sRGB
(But modified in Photoshop a mere 2 hours after it was taken?)
4) Still, it's a damn fine looking photograph.
Agreed.

Not at all. There are two clues that apply: the fact that the "comet" is
lined up perfectly with the over exposed moon, and that both are lined up
with the center of the photo. These two facts taken together strongly
suggest a lens flare, since that's how they behave. If it is a comet, these
facts are mere coincidence, and for me, that's stretching things.
Also, a comet would have a brighter head.
Also, the caption would mention a comet.
2) No filter is in use. That's the actual color of the Aurora, as it

Perhaps, like me, he's seen other photos of auroras, and doesn't find this
one particularly unusual. Plus, a filter would ***** with the color of other
objects in the image, the clouds and ice-chunks for instance, as well as the
sky. Plus, filters are kind of superflous nowadays with Photoshop as a
standard tool.
3) It's not doctored, but light levels were adjusted in Photoshop.
That much is possibly correct:

If it is a comet, wouldn't it have at least made the caption if not the

You think this guy managed to capture a stunning comet that no one
else can see, even though its brightness and size would make it a
headline item? That's besides the fact that it doesn't actually look
like a real comet.
2) No filter is in use. That's the actual color of the Aurora, as it

Because the person who took the picture listed the equipment he used
in detail, and did not mention a filter.
3) It's not doctored, but light levels were adjusted in Photoshop.
That much is possibly correct:
Not possibly, actually. That's what the photographer himself said in
a message. Did you think I was simply guessing?
