Why do Americans tend to spend so much on a casket? Well, you might
want a grand display for a day or so. Some are even "more
comfortable"—with an innerspring mattress and adjustable head-rest.
More likely, however, low-cost caskets simply aren't on display. As
one reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times found out when the funeral
shopper she accompanied asked if there wasn't something less expensive
than the $2,000+ casket on display: "They led us to a hall on the way
to the boiler room." Another woman was taken to a basement full of
cobwebs. And another was subjected to the icy sneer: "Oh . . . you
want the welfare casket?"
If you're curious about the wholesale cost of caskets, be sure to
visit Fr. Henry Wasielewski's website.
Misleading product claims can prod you to spend more, too. So-called
"protective" caskets (caskets with a rubber gasket) are supposed to
seal, thereby "protecting" the body from "outside elements." This
costs. The rubber gasket used to construct a "sealer" casket costs the
industry $8. But that $8 gasket is likely to raise the cost of the
casket by $800 or more! And what happens to a body in a "sealed"
casket? Instead of the natural dehydration that occurs in most
climates, anaerobic bacteria take over and the body putrifies—as any
grave-digger can attest after an exhumation. (You might want to read
"Bones, Bugs, & Batesville" and one woman's fight against consumer
fraud.)

Military caskets have unfortunately been used for some awful purposes:
The metal flag draped caskets arriving at Dover with the remains of our fallen
heros may not all contain their honored bodies.
Caskets have been used for reasons other than returning our dead and may still
be.
During the war in Southesat Asia, many of the caskets were filled with
China-White heroin and were even attended to by special forces honor guards.
The killed in action (KIAs) slated for internment in the National cemetaries
would be stockpiled at Ton Son Nhut Air-Base outside Saigon. Some of these
caskets were full of China-White heroin with a special destination tag and an
honor guard would escort those special tags to an out-of-the-way airstrip where
they would disappear during the night.
It has been reported that pilots from Air America flew the heroin out of Asia
and the profits from its sale were used to finance CIA operations.
Anyone attempting to comprehend how billions of US dollars were used in
creating the agents and forces that launched the Sept. attack will better
understand it after reading the final chapter of The Politics of Heroin in
Southeast Asia by Alfred W. McCoy and Drugs, Oil, and the United States in
Afghanistan, Columbia, and Indonesia. by Peter Dale Scott.
The Politics of Heroin includes meticulous documentation of dishonesty and
dirty dealings from the Cold War until today. New chapters detail US
involvement in the narcotics trade in Afghanistan and Pakistan before and after
the fall of the Taliban and how it has increased the global supply of illicit
drugs. bin Laden is not only an engineer, he is a narcotics dealer as was
another Bush favorite, Manuel Noriega.
Countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan earn more than 12 billion in drug
trade every year.
The US government, with the aid of the CIA, has always had its hand in the
illegal drug trafficing in Asia, the Middle East, and South and Central
America, so all of those young Americans are not dying so far away from home
because a government wants to liberate anyone nor spread America type
democracy. It is often because someone in our government wants to liberate some
farmer from his poppy plants.

Yes, I've wondered about all this myself. It seems the dead need quite
a bit of lavish comfort in order to properly rest in the hereafter.
Myself, I don't see the point. It's not like I'm going to have any use
for my corpse after I die. Whether there's an afterlife or not, I'm
quite sure I won't be checking in to make sure my rotting remains are
residing in proper comfort -- so feed it to the rats for all I care.
Drop it down a well, chop it up and feed it to the pigs -- or yourself,
if you're into that kind of thing -- or bury it in a drum full of toxic
waste. I couldn't care less.
I've often thought of putting a request in my will that no unreasonable
effort or expense be made on my corpse. Maybe I'll limit the funeral
costs to $50.

Donate your body to medical research, and its disposal will cost your
heirs nothing while benefiting society. Organ donor programs also
dispose of remains with no cost to the survivors.

I remember reading back in the mid 80s that even if socially acceptable,
cannibalism would have to be banned in the modern world. Between food
additives and environmental pollution, not to mention things like smoking
and alcoholism, human meat could never meet the standards we had for beef
and pork.

What if it were "game", captured during permitted hunting season?
Is venison, for instance, required to pass the standards for beef?
