Couple builds rock garden
By Marvin Baker, Staff Writer
After picking up some property in North Dakota about 10 years ago, Ron
Buxbaum wondered how he could reduce the time he spent on yard work.
He found the answer about three years ago.
Buxbaum, who admitted mowing grass sometimes all day long, decided to
set up a huge, flat rock on the site from his parents' farm because he
liked the rock and because it would take up some space.
Three years later, Buxbaum and his wife, Billie, have built an
impressive garden with various sizes of rocks, from peas to boulders,
with delicate flowers mixed into areas. The growing garden includes a
rustic natural fence and some benches made from recycled wood.
"We can't see it from the house," Billie Buxbaum said.
"But you'd be surprised how many people drive through (the alley) and
see it," Ron Buxbaum added.
Ron Buxbaum, a Montana resident nearly all his life, found the
property in East Fairview, on the North Dakota side of the border.
Billie Buxbaum is originally from New Town.
They feel at home because they're uniquely connected to Montana and
North Dakota, straddling the border.
"We have a Montana address and a North Dakota phone number," Billie
said.
"We can really confuse people Down East with that one," Ron added.
The property, situated just a few feet across the stateline in North
Dakota, needed something, they both agreed. Ron said part of the
property had some junk on it and after they got it cleaned up, it was
a bigger lawn that it originally appeared.
And given there were plenty of rocks on his parents' farmstead, just
to the northwest of town, he decided to start by hauling in the flat
boulder and slowly progress with other rocks to see what would result.
In the process, he discovered some discarded railing and cut it to the
right lengths and used it for rustic fencing throughout the backyard
landscape.
"Ronnie built the corrals and built the benches," Billie said. "He's
done a good job."
In addition, several species of trees were added including gooseberry
and Colorado blue spruce. Species of flowers are too numerous to name.
As time went on and it appeared the rock garden would become a
success, Billie's parents began to find artifacts to add to the
budding hobby. As a result, they've added an old wagon, cream
separator and sign over the top of the fencing that says "R and B
Corrals."
In just 36 months, the flagship garden has outgrown its space, so the
Buxbaums have "rocked" areas of their yard that would have otherwise
been discarded.
At the moment, the anchor rock, which began the Buxbaums landscaping
project, has collapsed. Ron said it would take a couple of people
using hydraulic jacks to get the rock lifted enough to sway it back
into its upright position.
Since that rock is what started the project, the rest of the garden is
to the east and a building has been built to the west, so access using
big enough machinery isn't an option.
Ron isn't worried about it. He just needs the time to take care of the
task. In fact, he said there is a larger, more interesting rock in
Montana that they both want to move onto the North Dakota side to add
to their collection.
It's a rock that is mostly flat but in the center area, has a dip that
fills with water when it rains. Horses often drink from that rock.
Next on the agenda is a mural that will be painted on the side of one
of the outbuildings. After that, they will gather more rocks and
beautify what was once a junkyard.
"A lot of people are going to the Western theme," Ron said. "They're
getting away from the lawn."

Couple builds rock garden

This is pretty cool; I've considered landscaping my parents' yard with rock
or something like that since about all we've got is weeds, stringy grass,
and sandy soil. I think the neighborhood would freak out, though, since
many of them spent loads of cash on sod and sprinklers.
Hell, we've still got Howeird living here; giving him rocks to throw at
passers-by might not be a good thing if he decides to stop his meds! *only
half joking*
