A recent thread got me thinking about how much I love cult movies. The
further off the centerline the better. Besides the obvious Monty Python
flicks, please point me to some more mind bogglers like these:
The Forbidden Zone
Eraserhead
Pulp Fiction
Kill Bill
Dr. Strangelove

(1) It might not be worth it for some people, but if
you can get past the shock -- like after being forced
to watch the movie dozens of times -- it's really one
great big dramatization of the old saying, "Power
tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely".
Tradition has it that Caligula was crazy than a "Fred
fester," but, if you can get past the shock value, this
movie portrays him as anything but insane.
(2) A wonderful spoof of B-movie classics which at
times goes so far as to replicate -- rather than mock --
much of the yester year's magic. This movie is itself
a 100% authentic "Classic" B-movie in look and feel.
(3) A rough & tumble detective story featuring Frank
Sinatra, and something of a precursor to the Rockford
Files, Tony Rome has swiftly aged into a wonderfully
campy movie that not even your grandmother could
take seriously.
(4) An early Sci-Fi film for me, and something of an
introduction to the concept of time travel, this is a
lesser known and under appreciated classic.
(5) The DVD version sucks. There's a reason the
director edited out all the stuff in the first place, and
it's not because he was hoping to making a rotten
film. However, if you can get the VHS or theatrical
cut, it's a fun, campy and not all that horribly inaccurate
dramatization of the writing & adoption of the Declaration
of Independence.

I thought "1776" was relevant because Nixon successfully lobbied to
have a song cut from the film (Cool, Considerate Men) because he
thought it was attacking the Republican Party in an election year. It
wasn't, but Nixon lacked the competence see that and his anti-American
actions over this incident (not to mention a couple of others going on
at the time) did more to give credibility to the argument than had he
left things alone. The DVD version has the restored number.

That's the rumor. However, the song is nobody's favorite
number from the film, and there was a great deal of
additional footage -- in addition to that number -- "restored"
for the DVD.
It's awful.
The overwhelming majority of the scenes cut for the original
release were done so to make it a better film!
There are few scenes in the DVD release which aren't
changed (at leat a little) from the original screen release,
starting with the very begining.

As I peruse the responses, some of my favorites have already been listed.
Here's a few more I enjoy, all highly recommended:
*Shadow of the Vampire (John Malkovic, Willem Dafoe)
Shadow of the Vampire is a film about the making of a German all time
classic silent horror-movie from 1922 called Nosferatu-Eine Symphonie des
Grauens (Nosferatu-a Symphony of Horror). The production of Nosferatu had to
deal with a lot of strange things (some crew members disappeared, some
died). This movie focuses on the difficult relationship between Murnau, the
director, and Schreck, the lead actor.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0189998/
* Ed Wood (Johnny Depp as "The Worst Filmmaker of all Time". Over the top
fun) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109707/
* Glen or Glenda (1953) Speaking of Ed Wood, this is his bizarre
autobigraphical film about his cross-dressing fetish.
Has to be seen to be believed.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045826/
Here's two from the ultimate Brazilian director of cult classics José Mojica
Marins. Don't miss 'em:
* À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma aka "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059440/
*Esta Noite Encarnarei no Teu Cadáver aka "This Night I Will Possess Your
Corpse"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060380/
I ***** you not, these two have everything you want in a cult movie: bizarre
characters, weird dialogue, sex, the occult, atheism...you name it.
Prolly wouldn't hurt to indulge in a little of the 'kind' to increase your
viewing pleasure.

I'd forgotten about Allegro non troppo. I searched for years for
that, eventually found one turn up at the local video rental shop, and
it turned out to be scratched. :-( Still, most of it's *****, and the
good bits were still watchable.

I'm curious...what was your formula for separating the "cult" from the
"foreign"?
No formula on my end. I just copy/pasted the replies into a text file,
and posted the result.

Nice list. Is that 5 votes for 1776? I might have to actually check
that out then.

No, it was a footnote. Several people had short discussions of their
favorites, which I didn't copy. There was actually some debate about how
badly 1776 sucked. I haven't seen it, myself, and probably won't.

Same here. I saw 1776 live in the '70s in Washington
DC and loved it. I have the DVD and find it stands
the test of time well, especially the music/lyrics and
acting. I'm not sure I'd consider it a "cult" movie.
I suppose that depends on the definition of cult.

I guess. When I was in grade school, the teachers of the high school I later
attended did 1776 - and they were all fantastic! I fell in love with it
then :)

My favorite song was "Egg"
Adams:
It's a masterpiece, I say!
They will cheer every word, every letter
Jefferson:
I wish I felt that way
Franklin:
I believe I can put it better
Now then attend, as friend to friend
On our Declaration Committee
For us I see immortality
All:
In Philadelphia City
Franklin:
A farmer, a lawyer, and a sage
A bit gouty in the leg
You know it's quite bizarre
To think that here we are
Playing midwives to an egg
All:
We're waiting for the chirp, chirp, chirp
Of an eaglet being born
We're waiting for the chirp, chirp, chirp
On this humid Monday morning in this
Congressional incubator
Franklin:
God knows the temperature's hot enough
To hatch a stone, let alone an egg
All:
We're waiting for the scratch, scratch, scratch
Of that tiny little fellow
Waiting for the egg to hatch
On this humid Monday morning in this
Congressional incubator
Adams:
God knows the temperature's hot enough
To hatch a stone
Jefferson:
But will it hatch an egg?
Adams:
The eagle's going to crack the shell
Of the egg that England laid
All:
Yes, so we can tell, tell, tell
On this humid Monday morning in this
Congressional incubator
Franklin:
And as just as Tom here has written
Though the egg may belong to Great Britain,
The eagle inside belongs to us!
All:
And as just as Tom here has written
We say to hell with Great Britain!
The eagle inside belongs to us!
