OT: Disney World |
Love it? Hate it? Recommendations? Only reason why I'm asking is because
the husband and I are taking the witchling there next month, 2nd week in
December. I personally loathe Florida and am no big fan of Disney (or theme
parks in general), but I have to put on a happy face for the kid. Might as
well as a nice chunk of my severance package from Sony is paying for this
trip.
So, anyone have any stories, horror or otherwise, to share? :)

I hate Disney Crap, but fortunately, so does my daughter, so we have
together managed to slip all invitations to Disney World for several years,
even with relatives in Orlando.
Florida used to be a really cool place to visit before so many people moved
there. There was a lot of primitiveness in Florida 40 years ago,
primitiveness that's mostly gone now. Still a little bit left if you know
where to look.

I've gone to Disney World maybe a dozen
times in the past 20 years or so. Relatives
live in Cocoa Beach so it's close. :)
I'm in my early 60s and probably enjoy it
as much now as I did 20 years ago, although
the walking's a bit tougher.
Once about 10 years ago we took a friend's
daughter (she was about 12 years old, IIRC)
and the three of us had a good time.
I'd recommend it because there are so many
choices about what to do. I think it's worth
trying once. I'm not a huge fan of FL, either,
BTW.

I've actually been to Disney World about five times (and Disney Land once),
but the last time I was there was about 24 years ago. I think Epcot only
had about three countries finished at the time. We're really doing this for
the kid and I'm doing my best to get psyched. I think it will end up being
a lot of fun as long as I'm able to keep my attitude back in "Joisey" :)

I love visiting Disney. The last few times I've visited, I've always
stayed on the grounds. Sure, they cost a lot, but I've always felt that
the staff there are giving me first class treatment.
And they have lots of surprising things there to entertain and educate
adults. They don't miss a trick. It's as if they really care whether you
feel like you're getting a great value for your money.
My family and I are going on our first Disney cruise in May. I'll let
you know how it goes if you're curious.
Best of luck. I think you'll find it a lot of fun.

Well we went 'on site' to Euro-Disney, to a grand hotel there, and had
the luxury of queuing for 30 minutes to check-in, then the luxury of
having to specify within 10 minute time slots when we wanted to
come down for breakfast because they didn't have enough tables.
Good breakfast though
We also had the luxury of lovely carpets to trek along to our room
at the end of a long corridor. And we were able to enjoy exclusive
rudeness from the staff. We would have been better staying at a
much cheaper place ten minutes down the TGV line towards Paris
(the station is right by the entrance to the park.)
Good park though, better than the one in Florida and much quieter
too with almost no queues for the rides.

they are really superb gardens. You can ride through them on a boat.

I did that years ago when I was still living in Florida - probably about
1984. I know the husband and child would rather stick needles in their eyes
then go there, but thanks for the suggestion :)

I, too, recommend staying at one of the Disney hotels at the park. If
you stay off grounds, be prepared to spend half your day getting to
and from you car. It will be more expensive, but well worth it.

We are staying off of the park, but they have a free shuttle service. We're
not renting a car :)

I've been there once - many years ago. What I remember is this:
Extremely crowded during Christmas vacation time - so plan for it so
it doesn't upset you so much.
Don't expect to only spend one day there - there's way too much stuff.
I think you can reserve times for going through exhibits at online
kiosks so you don't have to wait in lines so much.
The fantasyland portion is the same as the one in LA - so if you've
been there, you can maybe short change that area. There's still a lot
more in Epcot center with lots of displays, restaurants and shopping
centered on different countries and science exhibits.

While we are going in December, it's a bit before the Xmas vacation time, so
I don't think it will be too bad. My husband was about to get incredible
cheap airfare and hotel rates (we're not staying in a fancy hotel in the
park, either).
Don't expect to only spend one day there - there's way too much stuff.

We're planning on checking that out.

I'd skip the Magic Kingdom entirely if it wasn't for the kid who hasn't seen
anything (Okay, I must confess to a special fondness for the Haunted
Mansion), so we'll definitely be going there. Can't pass up Mr. Toad's Wild
Ride :)
Epcot will probably be more fun for my husband and myself; I know they've
added so much more to it. My daughter will love the science exhibits -
she's really into that sort of thing :)
Thanks for the advice! :)
