Diver takes the plunge for marathon challenge
A man who runs marathons in an antique deep sea diving suit has started
training for an underwater assault on the Loch Ness Marathon.

Lloyd Scott, 41, aims to become the first person to cover the 26-mile
385-yard distance under water - and says his only worry is that he might
bump into the Loch Ness monster.
But he says if he does meet Nessie, he can headbutt the elusive creature
with his diving helmet. Mr Scott will travel along the shelves and
ledges of the loch's banks to complete the feat.
The father-of-three from Rainham, Essex, is in training at a special
diving pool in Fort William in the Highlands. The new £3 million
Atlantic Reef Pool at Ocean Frontier is a 20sq metre tank complete with
flora and fauna and even a shipwreck, and simulates the marine
environment off the west coast of Scotland.
Mr Scott said: "I've run marathons before over land in this deep sea
diving suit so it was a natural progression to complete the course under
water. It will be quite dangerous. Aside from meeting the Loch Ness
monster, the banks of the Loch are very very steep and it will be very,
very cold.
"If I do meet Nessie, I'm not sure who will be more scared, the monster
or myself. I've been told that the big copper helmet could give quite a
big headbutt to the monster so it will be quite nice to make his
acquaintance."
For the challenge, an eight-man team in a special boat with GPS
technology will feed Mr Scott with oxygen from the surface via a pipe
and record his progress.
Don McGregor, 53, from Consett, Co Durham, who owns Ocean Frontier, said
moving underwater in the 130lb diving suit was like "running in
treacle". Mr Scott will join the 1,300 runners in the Loch Ness Marathon
on September 28.
When they set off on dry land he will nip round to Fort Augustus, where
the Caledonian Canal from Fort William meets Loch Ness, to take the
plunge. He hopes to emerge and cross the finishing line at Inverness
Queens Park Stadium two weeks later.
The former chronic myeloid leukaemia sufferer began running marathons
for charity after he was given a life-saving bone marrow transplant in
1989. Mr Scott has already contested the London and Edinburgh marathons
this year wearing his diving outfit.

Some kid lose his toy boat? You aren't going to have much room to
move in a 20 square meter tank with an actual ship inside it. :)
